Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello
In january 2019 I will go with some other skiers friends, first time kid skiers and some non skiers to a snow trip. Last year they have enjoyed Les Houches, do you know another ski resort similar? They liked the long and wide runs and its non ski activities and scenery.
Thanks

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You could try Zell am See.
Pretty town next to the lake, which you can hike across if its cold enough to freeze over.
Non skiers can catch the train to Salzburg or Kitzbuhel for day trips.
For skiers, the lift pass includes the Kitzsteinhorn glacier a short bus ride away.

People used to French resorts are sometimes put off by the altitude of Austrian resorts. Add about 500m to get the equivalent height for France as you'd be further from the ocean. This has the added advantage that more of the skiing is below the treeline.

Thanks but I was looking for something in France, since we prefer to use Geneve Airport (and don't want to pay extra for skiing in Switzerland)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@RonWeltyPT, maybe somewhere on the Evasion Mont Blanc lift pass area? About 1.5 hours from Geneva airport.
St Gervais, Combloux, for example. For a larger town with lots of activities, Megeve, although that is not a cheap option.
Les Contamines also good, but not connected directly by lift to the rest of EMB.

@RonWeltyPT, also on Portes de Soleil area, again close to Geneva, Les Gets is a good base.

+1 for St Gervais. You can also re visit Les Houches if the mood takes you.

I like LH and have friends that live there so a little knowledge of the area, although less familiar with non ski activities to make such a comparison of those facilities.
So with that in mind, I'd say tentatively, Sainte Foy in the Tarentaise. Pra de Lys closer to Geneva. La Norma in Maurienne valley, plus Bonneval Sur Arc at the furthest end of the Maurienne.
Each have their own discreet ski domain with some great skiing, decent costs, individual character and, if you need them, close travel to nearby ski areas to expand your scope.
We've been working round the smaller ski areas in France in recent years to explore specifically all of these. Pure numbers of kilometres they don't seem to convince people I speak to them about, but each one has offered us something different that has given us some superb weeks.
Well worth considering.

We love Samoens (and tend to end up skiing around the whole of the Grand Massif from there). Flying into Geneva, easy 1h10 transfer, family friendly - enough to keep everyone in my family (with varying abilities) happy. Also, amazing Irish Coffee in Morillon... which is a free ski bus over or a relatively easy ski..
