I’m heading to Selva Val Gardena at the beginning of March. I always normally go first week of Feb and am used to about -8 to -15. I’d imagine it will be a good deal warmer on this trip.
Normally I wear a full base layer, insulated waterproof ski pants, insulated waterproof softshell jacket and that does me. If it’s extremely windy and cold i’d put the fleece on, I never bother with the neck gaiter or balaclava.
This year, cause it’s going to be warmer (probably) and I don’t have much to take off, i’m thinking of going with a lightweight non insulated hardshell. I’ve been hearing people wear hardshells in the coldest conditions though and this is confusing me.
The fleece I have is cheap, light rubbish, I don’t use it but I will have to with the hardshell jacket, should I upgrade?
I guess i’m just wondering what people wear in spring?
Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

a helmet
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Normal ski will be appropriate. Open the jacket is appropriate and look for some thinner gloves. Ive never thought of early March as spring. to me that begins at the equinox.
The Mankini above is a bit overkill. Clearly he is British with helmet and rucksac. For a more radical approach see http://youtube.com/v/puSPHzcTvp0 (warning bare bottoms are on view)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Think there’d be nothing left to hold the mankini together even if the weathers a bit better than Feb

Why the confusion? People prefer shells because then they can flex what they wear underneath from a t shirt in warm spring to base layer, light fleece, puffy in really cold conditions. NB spring isn't always warm. We had to go in to get hand warming hot drinks one EOSB storm in freezing fog.

Cold: Merino base layer, medium fleece, heavy fleece or light down jacket, gore-tex shell
Warm: Merino base layer, light fleece (or no fleece), gore-tex shell. Pack the down in backpack in case of unexpected chill.

Softshells all the way . . .eg. RAB Exodus . . stuff a gilet/bodywarmer in your pack job done
Alternatively I've got a brand new, never worn (with labels) Mountain Equipment Frontier in fetching Citronella Size XXL (its more like an XL). .this is even lighter than the Rab jacket but not as thin as a fell running softshell etc . . .yours for £60 (!)
