Poster: A snowHead
|
This is probably a very silly question - so apologies in advance
I've just bought my first pair of skis (Volkl 4 stars). They were bought over the internet and the bindings were set for my sole length. When the arrived, I took 'em down to Snow and Rock who sorted the DIN settings ... so far so good.
Now for the stupid question: how can I tell if the bindings are correctly placed (i.e. not too far forwards/backwards)? The bindings attach to the ski on rails, and at first glance I can't see any centre position mark.
Again, sorry if this is a silly question - I'm used to letting the guys at the hire shop worry about the technical stuff!
Cheers,
Jon

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I have a pair of 4 stars, there is a small centre line mark on one side of the ski only

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Carroz:
I've had another look at the skis. I can see a serial number printed along the side of the ski, with what looks like a letter "I" printed to left - is the "I" the centre mark?
I guess I just need to check that the centre mark lines up with the centre line marked on my boots then??

Yes that should be the centre mark. They may not line up exactly, did not with mine, so i moved the bindings forward. The bindings have slots underneath marked with a size range, the whole lot then slides onto the rails and is locked with the slot headed pin you can see.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks for the advice - I'll have a proper look at the skis this afternoon.
By the way - how are you getting on with the Volks? Only got mine a couple of weeks ago - and the Milton Keynes snowdome is the closest I've got to real snow with them.

Done about 8 weeks on them in 168cm Excellent ski, very much an all round ski, i got them in preference to the 5 star which was better on rock hard icy piste, but not so good in soft snow and moguls or skiing slowly which i needed them to be able to do so i could ski with my daughter. (they were also a lot less expensive). They do get the wobbles if you go really quick, but a normal speeds the edge grip is excellent. You do need to keep them tuned to volks spec of 2 degree side and 1 degree base, a shop did them differently once and they were no where near as good.

Thanks for the advice - particularly on the tuning - I'll make a note of it for when they need their first service.
As a matter of interest, where did you find the info on the tuning? My ski's didn't come with any product info....

jonflat2, See my recent post re positioning bindings.
The midpoint markings on the ski are arbitary points that have no relation to were the binding should be positioned for you. I'd recommend positioning the bindings so that you're ball of foot is over the centre of the running surface of the ski.
As the bindings are on a rail on the 4*'s it is easy to move them, although it might mean cutting a new locating hole for the locking cross pin if one of the existing ones doesn't match your requirements. This is done by a competent tech.
