Tignes glacier delays the pre-season opening. It was due to open this weekend but that has been postponed until future date, as yet unannounced.

It doesn't take much snowfall to bring the glacier back in to play, turning it from grey to white. Longer term, it's the shrinking of the glacier which is the problem.

@rob@rar, Looking at the picture, I think it will need a fair bit of snow to be able to use the t-bars.

That looks particularly bare from what I remember from years of old. Has it been a particularly warm, dry summer ?

The snow might come but that glacier will go.

Doesn’t seem that long ago that the glacier used to reach the bend on double M. I can remember a big wall off the end circa 1986.

I think I might have skied something called the wall in the early eighties on a school trip, it did drop down to somewhere onto double M, maybe somewhere near where it straightens up to run down to the bottom of the lift (?).

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@rogg, you still can, it's more correctly the tongue of the glacier. Its quite a bit further back than when you did it but you still end up at Double M. The topography changes every year so it's best to wait and let the more adventurous types come down to see if it is viable for us mere mortals.

Opening date confirmed for 17 October, with confirmation of what runs to be opened on the 15th.

You know it makes sense.

Tignes glacier is almost gone.
Just 10-20 years ago, it had enough ice and snow to open every day of the year.
Amazing to see the speed of melt and collapse.

And yet if you look at the Grande Motte webcam for August 2018, the glacier looks in better health than in the August 2014 photo above.

UPTO a metre covers a lot of forecaster's ass, if not mountain. I'm predicting Tignes will get upto 100 metres snowfall (cumulative, not snowdepth) this season - we'll see in May if I was too conservative on this

Er...the 'up to' was my wording in relation to the circa 90-odd centimetres that is forecast.
So nothing to do with the forecaster's small, horse-like animal. (Unless you meant @rs€ of course... )

At last, a method of measuring snowfall that everyone can agree on.
Caveat - some resorts may have shorter donkeys than others.
