Well worth a trek.
Nevis bowls and Glencoe steeps in Mar and Apr, when all the rocks are filled in, and the sun pops out, are as good as anywhere for a weekend.

That was the Coe Cup. I was lucky enough to witness that moment from the sidelines. There were quite a few, probably better skiers than me making a hash of the run. He came out of nowhere and blew everyone away.
I still remember hearing him screaming all the way to the bottom! Everyone was.
I'd met his (deservedly) proud dad on the tbar going up earlier that day who'd predicted he'd win.

A little snow overnight. Likely to be washed away by rain during the week.

The Cairngorm funicular situation spells potential disaster for the local economy.
Shocking...

Yes, very sad for Aviemore and area, and staff, if it has a major impact.
It's also going to put pressure on the other resorts as people can't or don't want to go to CG. Great for the other resorts, except they don't all have the uplift capacity or car parking, never mind easy access in snowed-road weather. Hopefully the new - and hopefully ongoing - investments at the two Gs will negate these potential problems (in time). Nevis should be able to cope, although it has lift issues as well, as far as my (somewhat limited) experience goes.

Yes I think we will see more of those gridlocked days at Glencoe. Hopefully Glenshee will get a decent early base and their larger lift system can take up some of the slack.

Anyone know about plans for a new chairlift at Glen Coe? I first heard of these about two years ago - thought it might be up and running this season.Wishful thinking?

I asked them a couple of months ago on facebook. They didn't give me a direct answer so I said 2019/20 then and they replied "probably".

On page 2 of the summer improvements thread on Winterhighland the owner of Glencoe wrote that they have started work but are more likely to complete it next summer than this one. That was in July.

The chair isn’t going in this year but hopefully next.
The new piste basher garage is going up just below the sledge run. It’s visible on the webcam

Nipped up Ben Nevis today. Tiny bit of fresh snow at the summit

Thanks for the info on Glen Coe. Shame the new lift seems some way off.
Wonder if they've tried to crowdfund it at all. I'd happily chuck in a few quid!

|
|
|
|
@Neil Neige, I don't think it was a funding issue - more a timing one due to how long it took to build the access track for construction of the chair.

They were waiting an age for planning permission for the road up so it delayed everything. The new chair is sitting in the carpark. Now the road is done it'll be up for the 2019/20 season no doubt about it.

The Scottish resorts need to pull their fingers out and also start snowfarming.
Store a bunch of snow under sawdust or plastic on a shady northfacing summit in Mar / Apr... and refarm in Dec.
Plenty of low-level Nordic, French and Austrian resorts doing it already, like Ruka and Kitz.

Probably not realistic in Scotland. It doesn’t have the accessible flat spaces of uniform snow depth to collect snow and it’s a more sensitive environment for using vehicles. Far better to adapt skier behaviour to go when the snow is still there ie. particularly in March and April at Glencoe and Nevis Range.

If man can walk on the Moon, they can dig and store a few piles of snow.
