So, I have a aging Ortovox and realise the time has come to update. So, what's the market leader nowadays?
I'm an ex-seasonnaire now desk jockey family man who manages a week family holiday plus (hopefully) a long touring weekend a year. I don't need all the bells and whistles (I'm not a Pisteur) but would like to be able to find someone quickly and easily so something intuitive is a must.
Any deals for pairs appreciated as my wife could do with her own (plus shovel and probe) instead of hiring unfamiliar devices.

Mammut and Pieps.
Iv purchased the Pieps DSP Sport last year in Dec for £175.

My advice, as a full time mountain professional would be "Mammut Baryvox is hard to beat". The BCA tracker 2 or 3 are still worth a look at too, very very easy to use.
(beacon reviews is starting to get out of date, and now just points viewers to manufacturer pages when new kit comes out.)
Also learn how to use the unit in a search, even better a timed search against the clock - you don't need snow to do this type of training.

I do like the slightly cheaper (than the pulse) Mammut Baryvox Element. Very easy to use and a damn good range. It has been superseeded though by the standad Mammut Baryvox which isn't that different.

Another vote for the Pieps DSP Sport. I haven't had to use it in anger (or whilst crying) but it was great in the training sessions I've done.

Same here. Not used for real but several training sessions over the last couple of winters and it seems straight forward, including multiple burial situations.

+1 for the Pieps (with the same caveat re practice vs actual use). Simple, clear, easy to use and good range, and a convenient harness system.

I’d say the only thing against the Pieps DPS Sport is it’s a little bulky. But the Mammut Baryvox looks similar. If I was in the market for a new transceiver, I’d go for the Pieps Micro, which I presume would fit much better in the pocket of your ski pants (which is where I’d chose to carry one over a chest strap if I could). Though I’ve not used it myself. There was a link for one on the bargains thread.

Just checked the Pieps Micro, nice small form factor, also this come is prise of having less battary life and little bit less range.
Interesting, that it has automatic send/search mode switch, which is major question to me, I would prefer manuall mode, so that I know for sure which mode it is.

The talk of transceiver size got me thinking. I’ve just checked my transceivers and was surprised at how close they are, as I perceived the new Barryvox S as much smaller, maybe because it is slightly narrower. I’ve tested these three and the BCA Tracker 1, 2 & 3, Ortovox S1+, Arva Axio, and prefer the Barryvox models.
Pieps DSP Pro, Mammut Barryvox S, Mammut Barryvox Pulse (If anyone is interested I’ll be selling the Pieps soon).

I don't see size as being an issue. They're light and easy to use with gloved hands alongside the usual caveats about practice only so far.

+1 for Barryvox either S or the simple one . Best Range.
If touring or "open - minded " (i.e. different intuition, app adaptable etc) Pieps Micro. Thats what my kids are getting as they can cope with the interface. Not sure why everyone whinges about the downside of going straight into search mode when you take it out. ~Superlight and can go in a (certain type of) pocket.
