Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The Ski Podcast Episode 209: Les 2 Alpes, Trysil in Norway & Vans For Bands

@Roguevfr, yeah just noticed that myself this morning. Suspect inserting the snow reports in has moved everything as there was a fairly long gap between the first snow report.

Yes, about 4-second shift.

Than aside, the interview with the mayor of les deux alpes was interesting. Thoroughly get the Flocon Verte initiative, but the park'n'ride plan for car visitors has me foxed.

The driving reason behind us... driving... is that we can take all the kit necessary for a family of 4, and judging from the loads being lugged south down the Autoroutes, we are not alone in this. You are not going to want to decamp in a lower valley town and make multiple trips up and down and back to shuttle all your kit. Maybe it's aimed at a different market, those who drive but pack light enough to make it in one pass, but if I was in that situation then wouldn't I be on a train already?

Oh Ian, been at the celebratory champers whilst editing this one ? Several instances of audio overlapping as one item is begun before the last is complete.

Oops. Can you tell me where that is? I must have missed it somewhere in the edit, but I can correct it.

EDIT- Just had a quick listen. I found one at about 10 mins in. Mea culpa - Stephen sent me that snow report after I'd already edited the whole pod, so I squeezed it in at the last minute (as with Mike's report from Japan in E94) and I obviously got the transition wrong and some how knocked it out of sync. I've redited the file and uploaded. Shame that most people will have listened already. Very annoying!

Enjoyed that! The skiworld lady was funny and Al was gushing over those Deacons and Salomon QST 106’s. I heard the Blanks were dull. Is he truly independent or « friendly » with Amer / MDV?

Very good. As you’re doing a fair bit on Switzerland perhaps an item on the Patrouille des Glaciers would be an idea?

Great to put a voice to La Tania co.uk. I always thought it was Tim's baby. It's a fantastic website and a really great source of info. La Tania is a great resort and if I were to return to the Three Valleys, that's the base I would choose.

Also great to hear from an exec from SkiWorld. I used to mix with their chalet staff when I was a barman in Courch and they seemed like one of the better operations. It would be really interesting to hear more travel industry experts-particulalry from a finance perspective (may be on my own here as an ex seasonnaire turned accountant!).

Keep up the good pod and YouTube channel. They help me still feel kind of tuned in to the mountain community. Thanks

Pre-event hype I'm guessing trying to gauge response.

Gives the National Snow Show in Birmingham the opportunity to consolidate its position.

This had nothing to do with the event at the NEC - different organisers. They cancelled the show 10 days after they put tickets out on sale.
This is just my take on it, but the company - Smart Group - have recently taken on this project and I think their focus is all on this

We’ve always gone past the Montenvers ladders and hiked up to the hut with snacks, to join the James Bond path down. Assume that route is getting more difficult?

Enjoyed the episode! Curious about who the royals are - Beatrice and Eugenie?
Haven’t come across Neil England but enjoyed his stories about Villars, the Alpine home of motor racing royalty it seems!
Slightly depressing to hear about the Mer de Glace situation but reminder to go back and enjoy it while we can!
Like the idea of Whoski but looking at their site and the limited number of items, looks like it will be a struggle for them to compete against Facebook Marketplace
And Al really needs to give it a rest with his 72mm All Mountain ski nonsense Very Happy

Found the Brexit fatalism of Neil English a bit depressing. If he's not found a way of being "legal" for longer than can we assume CH will be a no go for UK citizens if we ever want to do a season in Europe? Maybe a question to put to headline sponsors the Swiss Tourist Board?

Episode 99 now up - talking about La Plagne and the ski scene in Ireland in this episode. Would be interested to hear what people think of the shortened length - have brought it down to close to 30 mins from 60 mins to make podcasts more accessible. Listened to this as its of particular interested seeing as we should be there for the first weekend of the races. As the interview went with the race director, I didn't think you were going to ask the big question of snow (or lack of it), as I thought that would be the first thing to address, but it was left to lucky last. Also explains why the audio on the interview with Zurbriggen sounded odd, I hope he was paying attention to the road.

Why put the podcast on youtube when there is no video?

@ster - I'd be really interested to hear what you think about the race in-situ. Certainly looks like it will go ahead now - evidently the snow situation can change quickly. My angle in this article for Fall Line was more about the need for snow https://www.fall-line.co.uk/ski-podcast-races-episode/

re YouTube - apparently some people listen to their podcasts through YouTube and it was easy to set up (automatic), hence that's why. Numbers of listens are low, but it's no extra work for me and means 'The Ski Podcast' covers more ground in any search for ski podcasts.

@BobinCH - Interviewing Antoine was honestly one of my highlights working in the industry. He's inspiring and it was brilliant fun to be in a piste-basher mashing up the slopes! re ST, it was genuinely mutual. After three years, I'd covered pretty much every resort (some like Laax and Verbier are not part of Switzerland Tourism, don't ask me why), so it was time for a change.
