Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

About 25cm of fresh snow today in Grindelwald on the First side. Maybe 15cm in town. Great skiing lower down, windy up top with most lifts closed.

Could anyone give me a prediction for Zell am See this weekend please? A glimpse of sun would be nice, for the views. It looks like there'll be some snow before then.

Saas-Fee was miserable today... five valley lifts were the only ones open until early afternoon and then they shut those down. Wicked wind. Best to sit inside and drink gluhwein. Tomorrow promises to be much better.

So looking at the Northern alps & the various GFS ensembles in my amateur eyes I'm seeing a drop in temps again mid month, but then what looks like a steady increase in temps (whilst not much alignment on the actual temps they all seem to align in the trending warmer) and perhaps just over seasonal norms by the end of the month? Obviously out in FI but will be interesting to see what the rest of March brings after a bumper start snow wise!

SLF’s view.

”Weather forecast through Thursday, 14.03.2019

Skies will be heavily overcast over widespread regions, accompanied by precipitation which is expected to intensify in the western regions during the afternoon. The snowfall level will ascend during the course of the day to approximately 1200 m. Only south of the Main Alpine Ridge is it expected to remain dry and, to some extent, sunny.

Fresh snow

Between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon:

- Jura region, furthermost western part of Lower Valais, Vaud and Fribourg Alps, northern Alpine Ridge: 20 to 30 cm; from place to place as much as 40 cm;

- remaining parts of the northern flank of the Alps, remaining parts of southern Valais, remaining parts of northern Grisons, Lower Engadine: 10 to 20 cm;

- in the other regions of Switzerland, only a few centimetres; in the furthermost southern regions it will remain dry.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, -5 °C.

Wind

Winds will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity, intensifying to strong-to-storm velocity during the course of the day, from westerly to northwesterly directions.

Outlook through Saturday, 16.03.2019

Friday

Skies will be heavily overcast and intensive precipitation is anticipated in the western and the northern regions, subsequently slackening off incrementally during the afternoon starting in the west. A storm-strength northwesterly wind will be blowing. The snowfall level will ascend, starting in the west, to 1600 to 1900 m. In the inneralpine regions, the snowfall level will presumably ascend only in the afternoon. South of the Main Alpine Ridge it will remain dry for the most part and become rather sunny during the course of the day.
Avalanche danger levels are expected to increase over widespread areas. Presumably, danger level 4 (high) will be reached on Thursday night in the western and the northern regions. In the furthermost southern regions, avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly.

Saturday

During the night in northern and in eastern regions, a small amount of precipitation is anticipated. During the daytime it will be predominantly sunny, in the northern regions only following the dispersal of residual clouds. The zero-degree level will ascend to approximately 3000 m.
The danger of dry-snow avalanches is expected to diminish. However, the situation for winter sports in outlying terrain will remain critical. During the course of the day, wet-snow and glide-snow avalanches can be expected to release on steep, sun-drenched slopes.”

”Fresh snow

Between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon in the Valais, in the Gotthard region, in the central and eastern sectors of the northern flank of the Alps, in northern Grisons and in the northern part of Lower Engadine, 40 to 60 cm of fresh snow was registered. In the other regions of Switzerland there was 20 to 40 cm of fresh snow registered over widespread areas; in the southern regions, less.

All in all between the beginning of this period of precipitation on Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon, the following amounts of fresh snow were registered above approximately 2000 m:

- Valais, northern Alpine Ridge, Gotthard region, northern Grisons, northern Lower Engadine: 50 to 80 cm, as much as 100 cm from place to place;

- remaining sectors of the northern flank of the Alps, northern Ticino, central Grisons, northern Upper Engadine: 30 to 50 cm;

- Jura region, central Ticino, upper Moesano, southern Engadine: 15 to 30 cm; in the other regions of Switzerland, less; or else it remained dry.”

Can any of the experts tell me how Saalbach is looking weather wise?

From what I can tell, some small top ups of snow over the course of the next couple of days and then some settled sunny weather through into middle of next week?

@Fridge03, It’s been snowing hard in Saalbach this evening. We’ve just come in from some St Patrick’s night revelry, and it was nice to hear the snow crunching under our feet as we walked through the streets. Tomorrow is also forecast to be snowy, with the weather becoming progressively sunnier and warmer as the week wears on. There’s plenty of snow, but this top-up will help to improve the quality and eliminate the stickiness from south-facing pistes. The week ahead looks good.

So now we have had this period of snow / low pressure - are we returning to another blocking high pattern? Or still lower pressure - just a calm period?

Looking at the "squiglies" - looks very very flat indeed (certainly for NWest Alps).

GFS 18z plays with an east west temperature split in just over a week. It’s been toying with this for a while. Bit far out.

Meanwhile some very fine weather on the way.

@axci, not much, it’s pretty dry either way.

Out in far FI you end up with something like this on this morning’s GFS output.

However, at this stage that is simply an illustration of one of the many possible evolutions rather than any form of forecast.
