Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Puzzled

Sorry if this question has been posted before, I had a quick look but couldn't find it.

Does anyone know if it is cheaper to buy skis in Canada (specifically Fernie, in about 1 month) or buy them in the UK?

Many thanks

Canadian friends of ours complain how much they have to pay for their skis. Although certain makes of skis are far more popular than you'd imagine from their UK exposure: e.g. Elan. If you have a look at www.skipressworld.com and choose the Canadian version, in the winter edition they had a list of many of the skis available in Canada. [Edit: In the Fall2005 edition, also online, they have (presumably list) prices as well.]

Also be aware of the claiming GST refund on skis: last few times I've been getting the receipts validated, they have been asking whether any ski equipment has been bought - the implication being that because GST refund is only valid for items bought for use outside the country they'll refuse to validate the reciept, meaning you won't be able to claim back you 7% GST.

I've just returned from a couple of trips to the USA and Canada (Vail and Quebec) and I was horrified at the cost of skis over there. Much cheaper to buy here or in Europe.

If you are in Canada in March'ish you should pick up some bargains, saw some Bandit B2's in sportchek (i think www.sportchek.ca) for $200 CA last year in Banff and bought my friend some '04 x screams with bindings for around £250 in glacier ski in Banff. It's only in the closeout sales that skis are cheaper 'cos they always have more stock than UK but some on this forum could argue that you will only end with punter skis ! (altho some label this years B2's as punter skis and I think they rock!)

ps you have to be in an area of Canada with ski resorts close by, I think Toronto or Winnipeg (!) will only have crap skis in the sale.
