Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Innsbruck has a new sonar system , they (the planes equipped) can land there blind.

Only "VERY" high wind is problem

Just look at the recent history of this particular Flight Amsterdam - Innsbruck..... ONly one cancelled flight

A nice GO Around on that last flight !!!!

@Steilhang, I suspect he means ILS, but the pilots would need special training given the nearby mountains and wind issues.

I think it some advanced ILS... Yes the Pilots have to have special training to land at Innsbruck so there is more of problem if the pilot calls in sick replacements are few.

@Markymark29, somewhere off Gampen apparently

Edit:

St Anton Bergrettung just posted on FB. I won't share the photos here, but post is here if you want to see: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2286106118292252&id=1516152765287595

Looks like from Gampen into steep trees towards Steissbach (the stream the valley is named after) and the Mattunbahn bottom station. Sounds like they dropped in, got lost, couldn't get out due to the amount of snow, called for help... And then triggered the avalanche before help arrived. Very very sad.

Very brave of the Bergrettung to go in there, in the dark, in current conditions, too. They deserve a lot of respect for that.

Does sound like they got lost and disorientated. Late in the day it must have been pretty dark and with poor visibility anyway not a good place to be at all.

Sometimes it is all too easy to forget what an unforgiving place the mountains can be, especially with all the infrastructure that a ski resort has.

Sorry if off topic - I’m on a flight arriving in Zurich at 9pm this Sunday night, with the original plan of driving to Warth that night.

1. Given the conditions, is that still a realistic option?
2. Are roads closing at night?
3. Any suggestions for alternative strategies getting there?

I wonder if the family found themselves off piste by mistake. The FB post doesn't make it clear. However, the victim apparently didn't have any avalanche equipment. That is, if I understand the German text correctly. Furthermore, it seems the family went off piste around 16:40, which is after the lifts close.

@rikwatson, roads have indeed been closed this week. The village of Schröcken (next to Warth) was cut off the world.
Closures can indeed also additonally happen during the night for security reasons
Sunday another dump is expected.
Even if the roads stay open, chains might very well be obligatory (for all cars, without exceptions) for Hochtannbergpass. You are aware this is a rather remote area?
I would not want to drive Zürich-Warth at night with these conditions. Don’t think there will be public transport at that hour (but would anyway also be subject to roadclosures of course)
I would seriously consider staying the night in Zürich.

that is not a good idea in any conditions arriving after a tiring day late at night then getting in an unfamiliar car driving 3hours in an unfamiliar terrain in the dark..

Winter Black Ice is notorious at night time

Sunday Night is will be Snowing Hard

Victim blaming is not appropriate. It was a family, it was late and they were in a storm. If you want to speculate then assume they got lost in poor visibility. Better yet, keep your pompous comments to yourself.

A mass of new snow is still forecast for all day and night Sunday/Monday for Vorarlberg and Arlberg above 750m, according to ZAMG, ORF, etc.

Will people be able to safely get in and out of Lech by next Tuesday?

@rikwatson, Currently the Bregenzerwaldstrasse to Warth is open, but snow chains required, the road from Reutte is closed due to avalanche risk and the road from Lech is closed in winter anyway see https://www.oeamtc.at/verkehrsservice/?region=at-8&view=verkehr# . The weather tomorrow and Saturday seems likely to involve less snowfall (should mean the roads get cleared) but more heavy snowfall is expected from Saturday evening on wards.

As others have suggested it would seem very unwise to consider driving from Zürich late on Sunday evening, you could well find yourself stuck in a blizzard in the dark, not a good idea. Much more sensible to wait until daylight on Monday. In current conditions get a set of chains from the car hire company, a shovel would also be a sensible idea. If you are determined to try on Sunday evening make sure you have warm clothing or blankets just in case you get stuck.

How does this current storm -- or series of storms -- rate compared to the epic January of 2012? I seem to remember people saying that was the most snow the Arlberg had seen in years...

January to March 1999 gave immense depths across the Alps including Arlberg/Vorarlberg, for example a compacted 6m at the top of the Valluga piste.

SCGB data (a day or two old) showing 4.2m there just now.

With the next Arlberg blizzard possibly over by Tuesday morning, will those who are flying into Innsbruck late Sat or on Sunday be allowed to their resorts next Tuesday? Or does it take a while for avalanche risks to be dealt with? (Bearing in mind past incidents such as exactly a year ago where Brits waited in Innsbruck for 3 or 4 days).

@Snow&skifan, The only real answer is who knows. However it is very premature to start thinking about the roads being blocked. Yes there is snow forecast possibly heavy but that is hardly unusual in St Anton in winter. Almost always snow does not affect access to the village. Lech is more prone to road closures because access is over a high pass but even here it would normally only be for a short time. The situation last January was unusual. The current situation has been much more severe in areas more to the east, in areas where the amounts of snow have been very unusually high. Yes there has been lots of snow in the Arlberg but not (that much) outside of "normal" experience, see the train clip above.

The most likely situation is that access to St Anton will be possible as normal

Thanks @munich_irish it’s reassuring to know that there’s not (that much) more snow than normal in Vorarlberg/Arlberg. We were getting the impression through media/accounts that the region had been hit by an extraordinary volume of snow in a pretty short period of time, giving rise to serious issues.

Your local knowledge is invaluable.

We are heading to Lech on Saturday, should reach the resort late afternoon do we envisage any issues with getting into resort? Today it looked as if the roads were open in the afternoon.

I have a feeling that we will be enjoying the hotel facilities though for a couple of days, looking at the forecasts

@Tollpepper, the road is currently open. Latest conditions can be found at https://www.intra-stanton.com/help

Not sure why you would want to "enjoy the hotel facilities" when there is fantastic snow to be had and lifts/pistes are being progressively reopened: https://www.stantonamarlberg.com/de/service/lifte-und-pisten

We arrive into St Anton tomorrow and not anticipating any access issues at this stage.
