Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hello everyone,

I've been reading your very interesting forum for a little while now but this is my first post, so I thought I'd use it to say 'hello' and to let you know that it's just started snowing in Gloucester (it's a rare event!).

I'm off to Livigno on Saturday. Anyone been?

Yep. I was there last March. Very good resort. Great value and snow. The transfer was the only drawback. I am returning next year so I was impressed.

Masque, not so little if I remember correctly - but it's been a while and the leetle grey cells are slowly vanishing.
Stevefromgloucester, welcome to posting here and have a good one. Please give us a resort / snow report when you get back.

kuwait_ian, Yeah, the town's strung out but the hills are a nice size for a week and if it snows deep then there's lots of guided off piste. I love the place and not just 'cos it's tax-free. Though the transfer's a b*tch!
(Hint ... pick up some beer for the journey, though the coaches always stop at a halfway point for coffee, wc, etc.)

Re. Livigno - yes. It's not an extensive resort, but I had a great time there. Apart from the Tuesday. The Tuesday was bad. Ended up in casuality.

Wow, so many replies in such a little time! Thanks for all the welcomes and all the advice.

Masque - good advice re getting beer for the transfer. Is it possible to pick some up from the airport (bergamo) or should I haul it all the way from England?

With regards to where we're staying, we're in the San Rocco area - Hotel Sporting. I'm a bit worried about it because post booking investigations have shown the Hotel to have poor reviews and the area to be described as 'Magaluf on snow' but hey, we're going whatever so we'll just have to make the most of it!

How did you pick your off-piste guide?

Hyweljenkins - Thanks for the link, I have made a note of your dining recommendations!

Timberwolf - Thanks! It's not that good is it?!

Kuwait_Ian - Will report as requested! I've been watching the webcams for weeks now - it's been snowing there on and off since last Thursday!

It's given up snowing here by the way and has taken to drizzling instead.

Stevefromgloucester, Hotel Sporting used to be a bit iffy but it's supposed to have been upgraded rolling eyes It is up at the top of the valley near the main Carosello (sp?) gondola but a long way from the town 'centre' .. but a good walk will sober you up. Day buses are quick and regular but can be very busy early morning and at lift closing time so plan accordingly ... some skiers will take walking boots in their day-pack rather than ride the late buses. Night taxis are cheap and easy to find.

All the ski schools have access or employ qualified guides, their main office is down in the town centre near the church. DO NOT be tempted to to go off on your own, the area is highly cultivated and there are lots of wire fences that can take your legs off at the knees ... that's not a joke Skullie If you get a little bald guy called Marco with a ginger goatee and a big grin you'll have a lot of fun ... but you'll earn it, christ you'll earn it (he runs up mountains in Summer for fun) Shocked

The Bellavista (about 200yds down the hill from you) has superb pizzas and a good wine list for another eating choice.

PS. get beer at your UK airport, Bergamo used to be a bit erratic with shops and opening time ... but you will need a 3hour bladder. might be better to split a bottle of spirit and some pop, take cards and music

Have fun ... Oh, the nightclub's a rip-off and the bar-crawl's pointless. Ski kit is cheaper than UK but maybe not quite as cheap as it could be given Livigno's tax-free status. Electronics are a good deal.

Once again, thanks for the advice Masque.

As I have a ten minute bladder I shall probably go with the spirits option! Smile

No, why?!

because I met a guy called Steve, who lived in Gloucester and was a builder, on a ski course at Tignes some years ago. He had learnt incredibly quickly because he had mates who instructed on the dry course and had given him a lot of tuition. He had spent only two weeks on snow and was extremely good compared to most people at that stage. Wondered if you were the same guy....

No, 'fraid not Pam, that must've been the other Steve in Gloucester! Very Happy

We probably learnt our stuff (and broke bones) on the same dryslope though!
