Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Valmeinier- half board or wing it?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hopefully some of you very knowledgeable people can give me some advise.

I've been offered half board in valmeinier 1800, 2 adults and 3 kids for £640 for a week.
Can anybody with knowledge of this resort give me an idea if this would be worth it, or perhaps using restaurants and bars would be best
....... Are there plenty of eateries there?...... I know that it is a reasonabley priced resort, if anybody could be of help, please respond. Thanks in advance

If you go there take half board as restaurants are a bit sparse and not the best and if you're in Easter hols it could be busy.
Not my fave resort but that deal would make me look at it again - that's a cracking deal - if it's £640 all in plus maybe travel.
The Valloire side is nicer but for £150 odd each it's virtually unmissable unless they have a mad thaw in the next couple of weeks - when is it for incidentally?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for the reply...... Its for the second week in april. The 640 is just for the half board, I've already paid 1500 for flights, car hire, accommodation ski hire and passes for the 5 of us. Which is pretty good to be fair. Just thought that maybe, considering it's not 5 adults, (kids are 8, 11&11) that we would be better spending it in our choice of restaurants? £640 should get a fair amount of food, right??

That's £18 for breakfast and supper for you all? Marginal, I'd say - useful to stuff yourselves at a buffet breakfast, to cut down on lunch costs! Depends on the way your family likes to organise eating - and what sort of eaters your kids are. If they're fussy, it might not be the best deal, if you get served a set meal with little choice. I was in Valmeinier years ago - unless it's changed a lot, there's not many places to eat. What is the cost for dinner at the establishment offering you the half board?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks pam, that's what I need to find out...... if there are many places to eat.
I think making a breakfast in the morning is easy, a fairly light lunch through the day and a choice of where to eat in the evening is more appealing than making sure we get up early enough to walk to the breakfast and make sure I get value for money.

I went there last April, as already said, not a lot of places to eat. Get into the mountain restaurants early or face a long queue. Cheap and cheerful, I enjoyed the skiing, needed to get out early as it became slush puppy by early afternoon. If you get the offer of decent 1/2 board I'd take it.

It's such a personal thing, this. I'm not fond of half board - my own preference is self-catering accommodation, a half-decent supermarket and a nice boulangerie nearby. Preferably a "traiteur" too and a restaurant or two for some evening meals out. I have three kids. 2 of them, when small, would never have done justice to a set meal in a restaurant.

Last time I visited Val 1800 I ate a coup,e of times at Pizza San Marco. If it's still there I would happily go every night! Not sure about breakfast, though with a good bakery you could eat cheaply I reckon. That said I would probably go for the half board deal for convenience.....

So IMHO, and I go there a lot, the restaurants in the upper village (1900) are the best. l'elan is kinda swish fresh food but is very good, and pricey. What used to be pizza San Marco is now pizza le Rock, the Pizza's are some of the best I've ever had, and the pasta and salads are good too. Les Lauzes is good for fondue, steak and pizza and very family friendly, I like the food in there. On the mountain I love Les mereges on the way to valloire....really great pizza and fab views. Lots of snow at the moment so second week of April will be fine I think. Hope that helps.

It's all helpful...... So Jim could you give me a rough idea of the prices there? I'm guessing the pizza place would be where we end up mist nights anyway

Margarita is about 6 Euro, the most expensive are about 13 Euro I think. Medium size basket of chips is about 3 Euro, beer 5 Euro. The usual free shots of genepi at the end 😂
