Going for three nights to this area in March. Thinking of staying in Dorfgastein or Flachau. Can anyone recommend any good value halfboard hotels or guesthouses and any comments about the relative merits of each area as I have not skiied there before.

If you decide on schladming drop me a pm - I stayed in a great B&B there earlier in the season. Didn't make it as far as gastein/flachau but the dachstein slopes were fantastic intermediate territory and I'll definately be back next year to explore a little more of the ski amade area. aj xx

loatie, I have just returned from Austria and skied very briefly at Flachau. I have to say I was deeply unimpressed with what little I saw, the queues were very bad inspite of modern lifts the pistes were very crowded and of a very similar moderate blue pitch.
I may have hit it on a bad day and only stayed a morning because of the crowding and clearly could not see all of what is a fairly substantial ski area but based on what I saw I would not recommend it.
In the area there is some more attractive skiing to be had, we drove a few miles and skied the afternoon in Zauchensee which was far less crowded, more scenic and the skiing more varied allbeit in a smallish area.

I was in Bad Hofgastien in January and the skiing conditions were superb in particular Sportgastien, well worth a visit if its not too windy.
There are six of us heading up there on the 9th of March for a few days.

Just back from Bad Gastein, a super break. I was very lucky as the snow was fabulous, I have never seen so much fresh powder in my life!
