Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Activities between Geneva and Moutier

 Poster: A snowHead

Evening all.

We are embarking on our annual family trip to La Tania. Travelling with the long suffering Mrs and our 13 year old son. We are hiring a car and have plenty of time to do the transfer.

Has anyone got and recommendations of activities that we could stop and do on the way to kill a few hours and keep a 13 year old boy interested (hard job ripping him away from the Ipad as you could imagine).

Thanks in advance Very Happy

Go to big supermarket, buy beer. If you don't want to go straight up there then Annecy is worth a look, but for a 13 year old?? Just leave him in Le Ski Lodge with his iPad.

As others have said, Annecy but equally Geneva is quite nice for a walk around... not sure if it will appeal to a 13 year old though.

I know you're staying in Brides but why not use the Friday afternoon to pop up to La Tania to get anything sorted in terms of skis, boots, lift passes etc etc etc.

Or there's a thermal spa in Brides, but again 13yo lad might not be keen.

How about a paddle-boat trip on Lake Geneva? I'm not sure what the timetable is in the winter. See http://www.cgn.ch/en-gb/ for excursions and timetable. Many of the CGI routes are effectively commuter links, as well as tourist excursions. There are various underground car parks by the lake that aren't too pricey. You could also mix boat and train - places like Vevey and Nyon have the pier and station near to each other. See https://www.sbb.ch/en fpr train timetables (although trains along the lakeside are pretty regular). You could contact the Swiss Travel Centre in London who could advise you and are in touch with special offers etc.: https://switzerlandtravelcentre.co.uk/

Any more ideas appreciated.

I am suprised that no one has suggested a walk in the mountains. Try one of the less British visted rannges such as the Bauges, between Annecy and Chambery.

+1 for Annecy. Beautiful place. Stick the 13 year old on a pedal boat then have a wander round Cool

OK - no massive traffic problems, then as French school hols not started. Yes, Annecy is worth a visit but, I'd say, only in bright weather. Nice old streets to walk about, some good shops (great place for shoes and boots), the canals. And good path to walk round the lake if weather permits. I'd specifically suggest you park in one of the parking areas on the north or north-east part of the lake then use the path to walk around to the old town - the area around the "Palais d l'Isle" - loads of cafés and interesting corners to explore. If it's a really nice day renting a bike then cycling the lake path south is very enjoyable - and not expensive. Be aware you'll probably need to leave passports as security for the bikes. if the "Bistro du Port" at Sevrier is open it's a good lunch stop, right by the lake. Then walk back to your car and carry on driving down the quieter east bank of the lake, through Talloires.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
https://www.chateau-de-menthon.com/
This Chateau has tons of history, and you'll learn about St Nicholas, The French Resistance, The Founding of the UN, St Bernard, Louis XIV amongst other things. We dragged our children round there and to our amazement they enjoyed it.
http://www.cheminsdememoire.gouv.fr/en/national-monument-resistance-plateau-glieres
If your 13 yo likes more modern history, then the Resistance Memorial is pretty interesting too. But the Memorial for the deported is quite sobering.
There's a bowling en route:
http://www.bowling-sevrier.com/tarifs/
And if you're fans on the TV series the Returned http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2521668/
Then the Lake Pub which features in many episodes is just down the road from the bowling.
I think you need to be 14 to do the Segway tours of Annecy - so that's out.
You can visit the Olympic Parc in Albertville ( Though we found it pretty dull TBH ).
If you want something invigorating why not do a tandem paragliding jump : http://www.annecy-parapente.fr/ or https://annecy.takamaka.fr/fr/p/vol-Parapente-annecy
(I know a few people who have used TakaMaka).

@craigjbarker,

There is a nice little ski resort jusy a few miles above Annecy which might be OK for a cheeky afternoon sliding if the snow is good. Small place but pretty. If you don't fancy skiing it is still an interesting drive up out of Annecy and into the forest. Did this as an excursion ourselves once between the Tarentaise and Geneva to kill a couple of hours. Follow D41 from Annecy just by the lake.

Is there a good website to check road openings Pam?

Ill program the sat nav for the hotel with some stops for where I want to go thanks rjs. Think theres a couple of Moutiers in France, seem to remember a story about someone going on the train to the wrong one from Geneva.

If you are feeling extravagant, you could do a slight detour and go on the bobsleigh run in La Plagne https://winter.la-plagne.com/events-activities/plagne-experiences/bob-experience.html 45 Euros pp. Ekosport in Chambery or Frontenex is a good place to shop for ski gear http://www.ekosport.fr/-cms-Shops . They have a sale on at the moment. Otherwise, the old medieval town of Conflans, above Albertville, is a nice place to stop for lunch with good views. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g219217-d1527906-Reviews-Cite_Medievale_de_Conflans-Albertville_Savoie_Auvergne_Rhone_Alpes.html

SatNav fastest route will probably take you on the autoroute via Chambery. It is a shorter, more scenic route along the side of Lake Annecy. http://www.savoie-route.fr/ shows you the road and traffic conditions.

Could try Vitam Parc just off the motorway after the Swiss border. Has a nice pool and climbing wall. Not cheap though.

EDIT:

Weather looks nice on Friday so you could head up to the pool in Champagny or go for a walk at Champagny Le Haut above Bozel. Or just head to La Biererie in Moutiers for some decent Belgian and French beer.

Chambery old town is worth a visit. Lunch anywhere around the Lake Annecy is lovely, especially Chez Ma Cousine. Conflans is a medieval village near Albertville and there's the Olympic museum in Albertville too. Swimming pool at Morel near Aigublanche has just been refurbished and is great value for money.

@steph, Chez ma Cousine Smile Smile Smile
I worked 4 summers around Annecy, 3 in Doussard.
Chez ma Cousine is where all the locals would go for a lock-in as all the other bars closed at 1AM.
Those that wanted a fight would go the Flashback club in Marlens

We always stop in Annecy if we can. There's a huge Carrefour hypermarche on the way into town. We stop there, then park in the underground lot below the city hall. Fun to walk around the arcaded shopping street, Also a good fondue/raclette restaurant, Le Freti, on the same street. (Rue st. Claire?). Highly recommend the lakefront for a stroll.

@WindOfChange, LOL, must have changed owners! Is now a very lovely restaurant with voiturier with great French cuisine and some South East Asian influences. Seriously good decor too. I cannot imagine a lock in there now! Very Happy
