Just saw the women's boarder-X final. Probably the dumbest mistake I've seen in years! While there's no doubt that she has nobody but herself to blame, I do feel sorry for her - she has the rest of her life to reflect on the fact that she threw away an Olympic gold medal. That's can't be a pleasant proposition

rob@rar.org.uk, one thing though, when you watch boarderX competitions, that kind of thing is common in a race which is well won, they do it frequently. She's probably done it hundreds of times before, and cocks up for the first time.... in an Olympic final.

Women's final, the leader had a huge lead with one jump to go. There was no doubt she had won, but when she flew off the final jump she threw in a trick (some sort of board grab - sorry not a boarder, so don't know the name), and then fell on landing. The second place woman rode past her, presumably with a big grin on her face, to collect the Gold.

There is a good quality video on www.tsr.ch . The commentators went quite mad at the end - very un-Swiss.
Anybody know where I can download some extended coverage of the mens BX.

It's quite common for a boarder to grab for stability in the air so I don't think its necessarily the thing that did it, probably more a loss of concentration - Shaun Palmer used to do big styled grabs all the time on the final jump in the years he was running away with Boarder X contests (& 1 X games skier X gold IIRC!)

Reminds me of a ski race a couple of years back, junior team member throws a bit of style over the last jump and ends up not only crashing but doing themselves an injury as well. Also brings back memories of Nigel Mansell letting the revs drop too low whilst on the final lap of the 1990 Canadian GP and stalling the car with the finish line virtually in sight.

The grab wasn't the problem, it was the fact she also pulled a "shifty" at the same time (turning the board through 90 degrees in the air) now that was a bit risky as it turned out.
