Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Everything You Need To Get In Shape For Skiing And Avoid Injury

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi guys, I've just completed a new post on how to reduce your risk of skiing injuries on my Sports Therapy website here: https://www.brightonsportstherapy.co.uk/lifestyle/skiing-physio-brighton. I'd really appreciate your feedback as to how useful it is. Any ideas for extra things that can be included or you would find useful? I was actually good this year and followed my own advice. 3 days epic skiing in Verbier... just speaking to the wife about a return later in the season... snowHead

Great, just in time, I'm off skiing in a week, so this will make sure I'm fit and injury free.... Very Happy

right some feedback..... first of all, for the three exercise videos, you are talking for about a minute for each before you show us the exercises. Its not just you that does this, a lot of youtubers do it, and to be fair most do it for longer than a minute, but stop it please. Its annoying, we just want to see the motion, not listen to a lecture before you actually do something - we are not listening to you, we are just getting impatient.

the stretches - the first two links don't work!

3 - don't drink at lunchtime.... Shocked Shocked Shocked I'm going back to bed Crying or Very sad

Thanks for your feedback @Sack_The_Juggler. I try to keep the videos to 1 minute max where possible. For future edits I shall do extra vids of Don't Bore Us Get To The Chorus versions. For the stretches they should be just pictures and not links. With regard drinking at lunchtime, it's entirely up to you!

Actually just watched the videos again, and I think you need to be more upbeat, don't try to say everything in one breath, and stop saying "erm". I do it myself in videos, i tend to focus on the content rather than how its presented.

By upbeat I mean more enthusiasm and humour (just with a smile will do), exaggerate the modulation and the tone, in the same way comedians do on TV to keep your attention while they are explaining something.

So content fine (but do the pre-lecture in the text), and more enthusiasm / joy / smiles when explain the moves - its not a funeral, exercise should be fun! Very Happy

....and stop saying erm

Jamie,
Pretty good. Agree with Sack the Juggler though I will have no more than a small beer at lunchtime!

The lighting is not right on the videos probably die the lightness of the shutters behind you.

My gym instructor tells me that as a 55 year old I should not do Plyometric exercises as there is too much opportunity for risky injury. I do loadsa of squats with various techniques. Likewise lunges and hamstring exercises. Plenty of core too.

Did you mean to have the massive YouTube window part way down the site?

I cannot read the advice on the right hand of the website. Frustrating as you are writing good stuff.

Keep up the good work

@Sack_the_juggler Stopping saying erm... I'm erm working on it! I find I do better when I've warmed up a bit and got into the groove of these videos. I'm not a natural! Sports Therapist yes. Actor no. I have a good friend who is though. I'll have a word with him see if he can give me some tips. The worrying thing is this is me being joyful and enthusiastic! Maybe I'll have a few beers before shooting the next lot wink

@hawkesbaynz Thanks for you thoughts. Lighting is definitely an issue without getting a full on screen and professional lights in. Definitely better on a bright day but we haven't had too many of those this winter. I may look to do more outdoors and that should brighten things up a bit.

1st YouTube vid should be coming in about 4 paragraphs in. Is it appearing a bit random? Not sure I have too much control on this as WordPress takes over a little bit - maybe I could look to reduce the size of the YouTube vids... I'll look into it. On the right side of the page should be just some sign up to our newsletter stuff. Is the rest of the test flowing ok? What device are you using to view?

With regard the plyometrics there is a certain risk reward you have to consider with any exercise. Yes there is an increased risk with ploymetric exercise. But it's something you should still look to achieve. Use it or lose it! Running is plyometric. Skiing whilst not plyometric is bloody hard work. Whilst your PT is in a much better position to know you and your current level of fitness this might be a good entry level plyometric for you as it's not as explosive as most other plyometric exercises. You can start with small jumps from side to side. But only if you don't fear it. If you fear it you will tense up - and that is an even more important risk of injury!

Very Happy I'm exactly the same, and it does take practice to lose the erms, and also to appear more enthusiastic about what you are doing, you have to really exaggerate the tone on certain key words or phrases to make people want to listen to you and its difficult to do that to a lens rather than in front of a client or even just in front of your mates - at first is feel like you are being hyper, but when you watch it, it just looks like someone who really believes in what they are doing and wants to spread the word.

Jamie,
Thanks. I had indeed been doing squat jumps holding onto 10 kilos either side but stopped a few weeks ago.

Was actually at the gym yesterday and tweaked the left knee. Overdoing the machines a little possibly. I use the max weight and add extra too! Should calm down by the time I go off skiing on Sunday but I am reducing the amount of exercise in the next few day, particularly for the knee.

Am using Internet Explorer on a different machine and the words are still missing to the right.

Max weight you've clearly got a good pair of legs on you! Have you done any muscular endurance work too? Dropping the weights down but increasing the repetitions. It's a bit closer to a days skiing.

I've just tried internet explorer... I could see the text on the right... but a couple of the still pics have refused to load. I've put my technical guy on it. There's a reason I quit IT for Sports Therapy!

@Sack_the_juggler If you're into football it reminds me of Phil Neville when he first started commentary. He was awful in first game. He's actually pretty good now. I can only hope!

I am, and he was, and I also remember Gary Lineker's first MOTD, he was very wooden and looked in shock but he improved massively

Good advice. Used the cross trainer & bike in gym last night mixed in with a little lighter leg work and core/upper. Will do again before I go.

I used to do marathons n my twenties but do not enjoy running/aerobic stuff now other than a fast walk with a dog.

@Jamie Webb, You appear to be wearing winkle pickers to demonstrate those exercises.

Is that wise?
