Poster: A snowHead
|
We are going to les carroz for half term, and just realised that we will have no internet access as the apartment we are renting does not have it.
My daughter will get very flustered if we don't have at least some access, (a levels so needs to do some school work) so any ideas as to the best option?
Don't really want to go to the tourist office as we are quite a way from that in a corner of pres du bois.
My current mobile operator offers £40 for 500mb lasting for 30 days roaming, could i buy a cheaper uk sim and just use that for the hols? if so who from?
Is there reasonable 4g in les carroz?
as you can tell not really very up with this as I have a mobile deal via my job, (had it for years) but it does not really do roaming.
Thanks for any help

@MountainIdiot, Sorry I didn't mention that I don't live in the uk, and we have very local mobile deals, and we are also not in the EU, so don't get the benefit of the pricing controls
The thought is a pay as u go UK or French sim? or a box with a sim in it that you can rent and also the last time in les carroz I remember my laptop trying to access some sort of village wifi point, but as we had the internet in that place I just ignored it
Thanks again for any help

You need to Login to know who's really who.

At the top end Giff gaff do a PAYG sim with unlimited always on data for £20 per month (some speed throttling) so if that is anything to go by then I would think you should be able to get much better deals from pretty much from any UK PAYG provider.

May be useful for others
After lots of research I have discovered that orange seem to have the best coverage and they do a holiday PAYG sim that you can buy from their shops (and relayshops and some tabacs (need to show passport) that gives 10gb data, 2 hours of talk and lots of texts, lasts for 14 days and costs Euro40, and uses 4G, so seems the simplest. All the UK ones seems to need to be activated in the UK which we can't do and some are only 3G.

I'e heard that Free do similar 100gb data for €19.99 but you've got to find a free shop and buy a mobile router!

@legue, the nearest actual Orange shop to Les Carroz is in the entrance to Carrefour in Cluses. They also have an English speaking helpline on +33969363900, so it may be worth contacting them to see if you can have one posted to you so that it's there when you arrive.

@legue, you're probably best/easiest to go with your current mobile operator as opposed to finding the Free or Orange shops once you're out there, the £40 might be more expensive but you could lose the difference in fuel and time driving around.

@marcellus, My current operator makes huge charges for roaming on my contract (connected to my job, its a sort of perk) they will charge £40 for first 500mb and then 10p a mb. Which sounds a bit duff, but locally its not, as long as I am on their network it is free data (unlimited ish) and effectively free calls and texts for £11 a month. So for me the orange thing in France is a good deal, for most UK residents its not now.
There is an orange shop near to where we get off the ferry, if i miss that will go to cluses on the way up on Saturday morning as we will need to do some shopping.

you might be able to pick up an SFR Wifi fon signal. depending on how built up the area is i guess.
https://fon.com/maps/
then you just pay an hourly, daily (etc) rate

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@legue, The Free sims run over the Orange network so you would get the same coverage, you can get them from automated machines or just get it sent to your apartment or rental agency. You do need a valid French postal code to order it but all communication is by email.
