Poster: A snowHead

I need to write DETAILED directions for friends visiting us who are arriving at Geneva airport and driving to stay with us and need directions out of airport towards Chambery.
I can drive it no problem but have no idea of motorway numbers and exactly which signs to follow when the motorway splits about 30km out of Geneva,
I know that you follow the france motorway signs (blue ones) to get into France but it is the directions after this that I am struggling with towards Chambery.
Can anyone help?

I don't know but how about this. Hit 'options' if you want to enter more specific address details. Hope this helps.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Mouth, check out the viamichelin.com site, or even www.theaa.com . personally we managed to get lost coming out of geneva, but the motorway was closed for some reason. Once we got out of Geneva it was relatively straightforward, I think head for Annecy/Aix-les-Bains/Chambery, the motorway signs in Switzerland for the A1 out of Geneva are green.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Mouth, go to www.gva.ch, the Geneva Airpotrt website, you'll find a section 'transportation/access' lots of useful maps and details of how to get to/from the airport. Once on the Autoroute just follow the signs for Chambery.

Mouth, the link slikedges put up is the route I'd use. It's slightly confusing just as you leave the motorway (it totally feels like you're going the wrong way) but soon settles down.

I alternate between Via-michelin (slikedges option), and Mappoint which I feel give better instructions, but not so pretty pictures. Usually If my co-drive has both print-outs to hand ahead of the journey, there is no problem.
Usually.
Trouble with interweb-produced routes, is that should you make a mistake and get off them, you really need the old fashioned map reading skills (not to say conflict management training), to get back on track.
Or a European TomTom...
Another site worth looking at is: http://www.autoroutes.fr/voyage/itineraires.php?lng=2 for toll, cost and timing information.

Mouth, if they're travelling at a quiet-ish time, it might be quicker to use the non-motorway route to Annecy. A little way after the French border there's a green sign pointing to Annecy (and St Julien) off to the right, it's the N201 on the map but I don't think the sign has the road number. Follow the road straight through Cruseilles, and get back on the A41 when you get to the next junction with the motorway and head for Chambery.
Actually, if they're coming in daylight (or are too tight to pay tolls ) and are heading for Montalbert, then come back off the autoroute, go through Annecy and drive along the lake to Ugine and then Albertville. Nice scenic drive.

brian, our hotelier in La Plagne told us to avoid that route at all times, shorter, but takes longer.

Helen Beaumont, disagree, we use that route every week, no difference in time.

Helen Beaumont, couple of years since I last used it but that route via Annecy and the lakeside is the way all Brit T.O.s (AFAIK) use(d?) for coach transfers to LP and 3V etc... it avoids tolls, of course, which might affect their thinking. Annecy has a reasonable 'Toutes Directions' route through the town. Albertville can be a bit slow at busy times of day. The lakeside is very pretty.

I like the Annecy route but I would never use it on a Saturday or Sunday - I try to avoid flying on these days anyway so have rarely had to. Saturday you have all the TO's/ general transfer day traffic and on Sunday's it seems to be a big cycling day around Annecy and general tourism just makes the road v busy.
brian, is that a painting of a view of Lac D'Annecy then?
