His 6th place gave him a personal best of 1.73 FIS points at tonight’s WC! 0.24 seconds off Hirscher in first

Pretty good second run by him. Lots of others had a lot of trouble on that second run.

Could someone explain what FIS points are? How do they differ from the WC points?

@endoman, WC points are awarded at each WC race, with the most points awarded to the winner, with points awarded down to 30th position (IIRC). At the end of the season the skier with the most points is the winner of the World Cup and is awarded a fancy crystal globe.
FIS points are not related to a specific race but are designed to rank racers current ranking relative to the top ranked skier. The top ranked skier is at zero points, and the lower your points the closer your ranking is to the top ranked skier. This is a quick guide to how FIS points are calculated, which I think is reasonably current.

Everyone starts with 999 points and are measured against the best skier in the world (men or ladies) at zero points, in a points list (or world ranking) that is issued every few weeks. National ski associations will use points to select athletes, for example for your year of birth you must be less than 30 points to make a national team
To give you a bit of context, Olympic B standard is 140 points. To ski to 1 point is brilliant

But if there's a fairly big clue to the result in the subject it's difficult to avoid. The edit (thanks) made it all fine.

Shame that he just got caught over the tails of the skis at the end of his second run, that was looking mint. He's skiing really well this season, certainly good enough to win a race if he puts it all together.
