husky99, welcome to snowHeads.
I note you are not just asking for opinions: you are also asking for ideas.
You are asking us to design for you a device to carry items needed for skiing.
Ideas and designs are Intellectual Property. Intellectual Propery has value.
If you wish snowHeads to help you in your quest to make your fortune, I think a donation towards this site would be in order. Click on the "PayPal DONATE" icon at the bottom of this page.
You will get an answer from me when I see the title "mega-snowhead" under your name. Other snowHeads may decide the same.

The purpose of this survey is for a class assignment, New Product Developement. The class basically goes through the entire process of bringing a new product to market, from idea to product. One of my teammates came up with the idea for some sort of compartment to store items with you while snowboarding. We need to figure out if there is a need, what items would be stored (to determine size, placement, materials, cost), etc. These survey questions help support the product developement (theoretical) decisions that need to be made. I am not looking for a design or ideas, just valid responses to the questions. Fortune? please. As a graduate student I have little extra cash to spare. I'm just looking for responses to suppliment the surveys already conducted at several local snowboard shops by some employees.

husky99, I’ve had experience of product development research and if you think that this form of ill prepared ‘shotgun’ query is either honest or productive, you’ve not listened to your lecturers or you have NO idea of mountain sports nor have done any existing market-place research.
Sorry if I’m wrong but you appear to be either a lazy student grasping at straws or a manufacturer trying to avoid r&d costs.
If your explanation for your post is valid, then may I suggest you go back to Market Research 101 and phrase your queries to provide answers to questions regarding your existing idea (it can be done without exposing the proposal).
Sorry guys, but as this thread stands it is (apologies for the language) a sh¡tty excuse of poor academia or corrupt business practice.
Cynical, moi?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to create an online survey, husky99, using say http://www.surveymonkey.com/ which would give snowheads a well-designed form to click through?

Wow, I didn't realize you were all so anal.... Questions should be phrased is this manner.....the form needs to be designed well because it is too difficult to cut and paste...... you need to pay before I'll answer.
I've posted to three other sites with none of this grief and gathered data from personal interviews.
Instead I get the "what's in it for me attitude." As an American, I though I would get these types of responses here.
As for the questions, one member in my group has the idea of some stort of storage device for snowboards. That's it. We have no proposal. The proposed solution is to be formed by the responses to these question, thats why they are shotgun. BTW market research is one of my fall classes I'll be sure to work the kinks out of the survey skills then.

husky99, my apologies if I came out with all guns blazing when you are just an simple innocent fellow wanting information on how to develop your idea (I'm not quite convinced yet).
In medicine I get lots of similar surveys from companies wanting to promote their products. The sensible companies offer some sort to reward for time and brain-effort: they get responses. Other companies offer no rewards, but still do get some responses because there are a lot of gullible guys out there.
You may well not have had any fuss from other sites, but you are working with the elite here. A recent survey of snowHeads members showed the minimum IQ was 136 (we will ignore Ian H's result as an abnormal outlier). You're talking to genuises here.
So, if you want quality....

OK husky99, sorry to be so tardy in the feedback (I’ve been out of the loop this weekend). I’m not anal, I’ve just been around too long and have had experience of some VERY dubious business practices. Regrettably your initial query had too many echoes of some of those practices. Re-reading your initial and subsequent posts does lead me to one inescapable fact. You’ve not done your initial market/product research, you don’t need us to specify a need that you’ve already identified. There are numerous ways of strapping or carrying a board, particularly if you’re prepped for off-piste. If your mate has an idea that doesn’t seem to be in the retail or specialist market, tell him to get his butt down to the patent office, do a search and then register it. Protect his idea then look to complete the design, market or manufacture it.
This has got nothing to do with what’s in it for me, it’s far more to do with my objection to doing the work of a lax student or worse, a lazy and willfully ignorant marketing department.
2¢ worth finished!
Good luck

Hi husky99, is this the same survey that appeared on Epic a few months ago?
If not, then here are my answers

None
2. How many days per year do you snowboard?
None
3. How long do you snowboard on a typical day?
roughly zero seconds
4. How many times do you visit the lodge on a typical day?
Masonic - never
Grand order of the Buffalo - never
Ski lodge - when my bladder is full, and there's no trees nearby
5. Describe the typical conditions and various areas in which you usually snowboard.
I can't answer this question. See 1, 2 & 3 above for a clue.
6. What do you carry with you on the mountain and where do you store those items?
Wallet - pocket
Camera - pocket
Lift pass - pocket
Sunscreen - pocket
Goggle cleaner - pocket
Liquid Wax - pocket
Colt 45 with silencer - holster (only in certain states)

AK-47
8. Why can’t you carry these items?
Can't get a good silencer that will prevent avalanches
9. What are the problems or restrictions you’ve encountered with carrying items with you while snowboarding?
It seems to me that snowboarders would like to carry seats with them, to save them having to sit on the piste.
10. How have you worked around the problems/restrictions?
I bought a machete.
11. What are the problems you’ve had with these work-around solutions?
Blood spatter on my one piece. And I have to listen to the idiots as they whine
12. What would be your ideal solution?
a. Features?
that it works
b. What would it do?
silences my AK-47 effectively
c. What would it look like?
round and threaded to go on the business end of the weapon
d. How would it work/function?
it would reduce the noise created in the barrel, while not reducing the velocity
13. How much would you be willing to pay for a viable solution?
Up to £20, which is about $500
14. Where/when would you purchase said solution?
with my lift ticket
15. Where would you want to have this solution attached?
on the end of my weapon.

13. How much would you be willing to pay for a viable solution?
A truly viable solution would be self-financing
14. Where/when would you purchase said solution?
If I knew that, i wouldn't be answering these questions
15. Where would you want to have this solution attached?
NO COMMENT!!!!

I can see that snowHeads are in a spectacularly helpful mood on these questions! I had some nearly useful answers but then my computer hung and I couldn't be bothered to type them in again....
Are there rucksacks that work well with shallow chairlifts - this was the only problem I've had with a rucksack.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Yes Ian, it would be neat to have a backpack that automatically whizzed round to your front when you sat down on a chair lift.
(I nearly said get a smaller bum, but that would have been very rude...... )

Husky, as it is a new day I will attempt to be more helpful than in my earlier reply.
Your colleague has identified a "need": a storage system for carrying things on the slope. But what you have not done is identify whether this need is adequately served by current solutions. Instead, you seem to be asking us to let you know whether there is a need for a new solution - which you may or may not then be able to provide. As has been said before, its seems that you are asking us to come up with your ideas but i will put those concerns aside for now.
The current solutions are: backpack, pockets, bumbag (fannypack to you) or (for the girls only) any of the aforementioned that belong to a boyfriend or a guy in the group that fancies you.
Most people tend not to carry too much when on the hill. After all, skiing is a physical activity and you don't want to be hindered. If you want to carry more than the average, there are many well designed backpacks out there.
Someone has mentioned the problem of sitting on a chairlift with a back pack. The solution here is to either use a low profile pack (plenty on the market) or simply take the backpack off and have it on your lap while on the lift.
The backpack manufacturers are usually well funded and have teams designing great new features that they hope will convince us to replace our perfectly functional backpacks with their new model. If you think that you can think of a better idea than they can, good luck to you. From your posts, i am guessing that you have not already had that flash of inspiration.
