Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saalbach/Hinterglemm

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I posted a while back for info on Saalbach for my forthcoming (family duty) trip. Now back from the US/Canada and a few more questions if you will -

1) I think there is a local ski/mountain guide: Sepp Mitterer. Has anyone skied with him?

2) Presume prettiy easy to get to Zell Am See/Kaprun and is it worth it for expert/offpiste stuff?- for the skiing I mean

3) I've heard (possibly incorrectly) that the bars can be a tad pricey etc. Any less expensive/quieter spots

4) Anyone just back able to comment on the conditions?

Cheers for all your help.

musikski,

Can only comment on 3+4

I think you will find the bars pretty good value if Soll is anything to go by.

Conditions are near perfect with a fantastic base with loads of new pow.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

musikski,

2) Easy to get to Zell, takes about 10-15 mins and there are taxis and I suspect a public bus service, but the tourist office will be able to help with that one.

3) It is more expensive that Soll which is excellent value for money. But it was the same if not slightly cheaper than the average UK price for beer and the only drinks that were a bit more expensive were spirits and mixers and wine in hotels. Basically we are not talking French prices! The mountain restaurants were typical Austrian prices = good value for money. There was one bar in the resort that was a bit more expensive than other bars and is just off the main street up a slight hill (can't remember the name sorry). Unless you are a major drinker, it won't break the bank so don't worry too much. I was last there 2 years ago but I'm sure it's a similar sitution now.

4) As johnboy said, the snow is awesome in that part of Austria this year. I spent New Year in Bad Gastein and it was fantastic then, some were saying the best season for 50 years!

Myself and a few other Snowheads are in Saalbach W/C 25th Feb and are planning to have a few beers together. The time and place will be confirmed on the site soon no doubt (if you are in the resort that week).

Thanks for the info and good to hear the conditions are 'cool' - in more ways than one. Little Angel I'll look out for the post regarding the 'Beerheads' session!

andyarmitage, I'm sure you won't be disappointed - unless we've hyped it up too much! The snow is looking good! A nice snowfall on about the 23rd of the month would be good followed by sunny weather with temps. just below zero. I can dream!

musikski, Zell/Kaprun are about 10-20km away. But if you're looking for off-piste expert terrain, I wouldn't head there. Kaprun is all pretty tame, and Zell is pretty strict about off-piste skiing. You'll find more challenging stuff if you look hard enough in Saalbach/Hinterglemm/Leogang. Zell is very pretty. At this time of year I wouldn't consider Kaprun (although in April/May Kaprun is well worth vistiting although it's filled with drag lifts, and it's not the most challenging).

In terms of prices, you'll find Saalbach mountain huts about the same price as English pub food/beer, and the bars in town comparable it English bars. Compared to big french resorts it's very cheap. Many places do happy "hours" early evening, where you can get beers for a couple of euros per half-litre. I would expect to pay London prices and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
