Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Flaine at New Year.

I'm contemplating booking a break over the new year period to Flaine but I'm wondering about snow conditions and the amount of runs being open. I seem to recall last year that there was a really early dump of snow and then it got quite bad until mid to late January unless I dreamt this! I know you can never be 100% certain but has anyone been (or is) a new year regular in the Grad Massif and could say what the usual conditions are at this time of year?
Thanks......

I'm not an expert, but Flaine usually has very good snow conditions. I.e. It holds snow very well. That's no help if there hasn't been any yet. New Year is usually much better than Christmas, but you are still taking. A bit of a punt, especially as it is an exceptionally busy week so any available snow will have a lot of people on it. I think you will probably be OK but I never think skiing at NY is a good idea unless you have no other options.

Often flaine has limited runs open early season as it takes alot of prep to open certain areas, building snow bridges and filling the holes. Yes it holds its snow well, (the main bowl is north facing, and bloody cold early season.) but it takes time opening things. If it is reasonable snow the rest of the GM often has more open, but not usually with the vertical of what is open in flaine.

Also New Year is very busy, so do lessons....

The main change for this season in Flaine is the addition of a big artificial water reservoir on the tourmaline run in order to reinforce the until now limited snow making . Some debate as to whether it will be fully operational fir snow making in 2017/18 as it is only being completed now but can only help!

Looks to be a none starter all round - easyJet have switched Saturday flights to Fridays at the back end of March from Newcastle! All the decent accommodation seem to offer Saturday changeovers with nothing doing on a Friday, thanks for the responses however.

The best way round that is to stay Friday night in an Ibis around the airport and get your transfer on the sat morning.
