I quite fancy the idea of a visor helmet because I'm just sick of the faff with Google's and glasses. Tried numerous different goggles that are in theory OTG and results have been at best tolerable.
Problem I have is that the visor helmets are generally really boring colours and I tend to go for the fruit salad look. Would it be feasible to spray a different colour. See arguments about gopro stickers comprising the material so maybe issues with the paint solvents?

There are definitely ways to do it, but you will need to check paints and materials etc if you DIY.
Otherwise there are places that do custom helmet paint jobs. These guys do all the helmets for the UK Red Bull athletes, for example: http://imagedesigncustom.co.uk

@Posidrive, To give you a clue on custom paint jobs, I had one done professionally on a helmet, you are talking circa £150

Might be cheaper if you just have a single colour, say black to red. My helmet has a visor, it's brilliant, the only time I get problems is when I do a face plant. Then I have to retreat to a coffee stop, dismantle helmet/visor, dry and reassemble.

I have to say that I personally don't have any concerns about stickers compromising my helmet (phnar phnar) and I think until insurers insist that you wear helmets when skiing (they currently don't), there is no argument that your helmet needs to be kept in a particular condition. I suppose the only issue might be is if you've performed a modification to a helmet that actually makes it more dangerous (IE if you bolted a camera mount into it and were then injured by the bolt).
All manufacturers of safety equipment always put a clause in saying that any paint/oil/adhesive/etc could potentially damage the fabric of the item and prevent it working properly but it's just an attempt to wiggle out of potential claims really. You go into any busy engineering workshop and see what chance you've got of keeping oil and paint and adhesives off your helmet... you'd need a new one each day!

@dp, I was thinking of going with a helmet with colour to match my salopettes, trouble is that I don't really want to google "purple helmet"...also most the ones I see are most definitely for chicks, strange how we assign gender to colours.

@SnoodlesMcFlude, A few years back, a friend's daughter (a country lass) was researching for a school project she had chosen to do. Without considering the implications, on her father's advice, she googled that well known male member of the (black) grouse family for more information on it's behaviour on the lek. Both of them were somewhat surprised and horrified at the images the search threw up !

@dp, Stereotypes, are stereotypes because there is usually and element of truth in them.
I know my Sister's initial attraction to ski clothing or skis is based on appearance, not technical specification. She wouldn't for example, ever pick a pair of skis with an asymmetric patterned top sheet. Also, absolutely everything has to be colour coordinated.
Back to the original thread, I guess the majority of helmet makers follow the standard dark colours for men and light colours for women. This is somewhat strange, since helmets (or gloves) are about the only piece of equipment, where there isn't a physical difference in shape between the genders, other than size, so any colour could be made without a significant impact on production costs.

Totally agree on being based on an element of truth.
Buying mountain walking gear for dp... oh look this one's made of fabric-x-2000+ that's a bit more waterproof AND breathable than the fabric-x-1500 that I bought last year. AND it's in the sale. Horrible colour but f- it, having that!

(dp) yes dear but they're all made of plastic and you'll sweat like jimmy saville in mothercare (lady dp) yes but I like the colour (dp) but look they do a fabric-x-2000+ jacket in pink! how about this one? (lady dp) I like this shade of pink better. (dp gives up)

I guess the problem is that you have to base your production runs on likely sales. As a manufacturer the art is producing enough that you don't quite sell out but few enough that there's not many leftover. Helmets have been around long enough that manufacturers should have a pretty good idea how many of each variety are likely to sell in any given territory in a season.
