Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can anyone recommend good resort with accommodation next to the children's ski school? Preferably high and pretty. Any advice much appreciated. Very Happy

Welcome to Snowheads @almorris_81!!

High and pretty dont necessarily go hand in hand but there are a couple of great option in the Three Valleys. Chateau Le Maison D'Or in Val Thoren has its own ski locker and a 20 yard traipse to the kids ski school meeting point.

Have you got a country in mind so people can narrow down some suggestions?

Thanks, we normal opt for Austria and have for the past couple of years been to Oberlech. Never been to France. We have a couple of young children and would like to be as close as possible to the ski school and avoid buses at all cost if possible!

Saalbach, where the two main ski schools, Snowacademy and Furstauer, have kids areas almost in the back gardens of the hotels on the main street. Likewise Hinterglemm, where many of the hotels back on to the Snow and Fun kids area.

You don't need to stay high. You just need to have access to high skiing (if you are skiing at riskier times of the year). Young children especially will sleep better at 1300m than 2300m as just one reason for staying lower.

Also, most resorts will have some accommodation close to the meet up point. So you need to be more careful about the precise location of the accommodation rather more than anything.

Finally, the ski school itself is important. Being close to the meeting point of a carp ski school isn't going to help much.

In Wengen the kids ski school is about 100 yards from most of the hotels. Sunstar, Victoria Lauberhorn and Silberhorn are the most convenient.

Pepi Gabl through Esprit Ski in St Anton. High and pretty? Matter of opinion - pretty snow sure and a great ski area. It's in the "family" end of town and next door to a shop with the ski lockers and then up some stairs to the school.

Have you looked at Serfaus? Never been but similar standards to Oberlech when I looked and very family friendly

Rohrmoos, near Schladming. Pretty enough, not exactly high, but that shouldn't be a problem. Lots of ski in, ski out near ski schools.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Hopfgarten in the SkiWelt, a pretty Austrian village. The absolute beginner slope is in the village near the gondola station, only a few metres from all the accommodation. The first stage of the gondola goes up to easy nursery slopes, ideal to progress on to. The local ski school, Skischule Alpin, is excellent. The ski hire Kurz is also at the gondola, and has a ski depot.

There are two railway stations in the village for an easy transfer from Munich, Salzburg or Innsbruck.

@almorris_81, would recommend les menuires, although quite high but definitely not very pretty, there seems to be plenty of self catering accommodation that is ski in/out and close to free gondola lifts that drop you off close to the central meeting points for the esf (several dotted around the resort)

Agree with this. There is a lot of accommodation here (including ours), which overlooks the children's ski-school/kindergarten areas, so that you can actually wave to your kids from the window of your apartment or hotel room.

Your problem is that your criteria is too broad. There are dozens, actually hundreds of places you could stay with accommodation near to a ski school meet up point. What you need to do is to find a good ski school and then find suitable (to your needs) accommodation close by. You may want to cut down the field beforehand in terms of countries, ski areas or resorts to give SH's a better shout at recommending a ski school. The criteria high and pretty is largely meaningless I'm afraid. What is your budget, what sort of accommodation do you want, are you DIYing, flying, driving. Who else is in the party, what do they need? Do you want some apres, restaurants. Etc., etc.

Ok @Layne, here goes.
We are a party of 10 with a mix of children (4,6,10&14), some non skiers and good skiers. We would like a hotel or catered chalet, close to the nursery slopes. We would like to avoid busy resorts and buases as much as possible. Having a pretty resort with traditional timber buildings goes down well with our parents who love walking but don't ski.
Hope that's enough info and a big enough challenge for the SH's out there!
We love Oberlech and would return in a flash but we have less of a budget this year so the to look elsewhere.

If going late March then altitude could come into play a bit but with your group and situation you're not going to want to be up at Val T or Tignes for example.

"Not busy" won't be a problem at that time of the year.

No buses means effectively ski in/ski out. Generally not an issue in France, other countries you just need to be a bit more careful as they may not be.

Sounds like you want to avoid the mega resorts. In France perhaps Megeve, La Rosiere fit the bill. I don't know it but the guys suggestion of Hopfgarten sounds good.

@almorris_81, try the Hubertushof in Stuben if you love the Arlberg. I was lucky enough to visit the Montana 2 years running c. 10 years ago and still rates as our best ski trip. Went to the Hubertushof the year after and was roughly half the price of the Montana. Ski school was a lot quieter than Oberlech so my son got better instruction
Failing that I would think Hinterglemm a great choice (night skiing and fun park make it a better option for you than Saalbach in my humble opinion)
