Just got news of this although sirens kept us awake most of the night. Apperently no more; Cy-Bar, Dick's T Bar, Queen Vic.

Very true, Arno, have some very fond fuzzy memories. Although it sounds as though it was reasonably well contained to just 4 buildings? Shame to lose them, but shows you what can happen.
Friends used to work in Chalet Gueret in Essert-Romande - a very, very old chalet, traditionally constructed of pretty much just tinder and creosote. A fire a few years ago took just 15 minutes to completely obliterate the building.

Turns out, there was an old store between the Bureau des Guides and Cybar(Where Munchies put out their terrace in the summer). Somehow this became enflamed and so it spead to Cybar, Dicks etc. No one has been hurt although a few people are without homes. It is being treated as accidental. Sad, the oldest part of Chamonix no longer there, i'm sure there are things to be read into that.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Balls! I take it there are still places to go for a drink though? (selfish point of view I know). Would be a shame if the skiiers stayed away because if this.

Jack Hallam, To be fair and in my opinion, Chamonix has only lost a part of it's history. I would have rather thrown 5 euros down the toilet than exchanged it for beer in one of the now missing establishments. The newley revieved Cham-Sud is a good place to start for a night out, i'm sure they'll be the ones to benifit from this catastrophy.

Not many places with the sheer capacity of the Queen Vic etc - e.g for Rue Des Moulins Bar'dup is usuallly very crowded anyway plus it puts more pissed Brit punters in other establishments spoiling for fights etc.

Although it's sad to lose such a classic part of Chamonix, by far the worst loss is the guides office. Just imagine all those people who turned up the next day to find the centre of Cham's off piste community in ruins! So sad!
