Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Steep skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
There's something strangely compelling about the sphincter tingling feeling looking down a steep no fall couloir....

I was introduced to it by Rémi Lecluse, a Chamonix guide, who sadly passed away in the Himalayas a few years ago.

http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=62011

Chamonix is the Mecca for Steep skiing in Europe but Verbier also has some good options with the mythical Bec des Rosses, venue for the FWT finals, top of the list.

Following the finals a couple of weeks ago the route up is now well trodden and Having eyed it up for a few days, Chris and I went up for a look yesterday.

The route up follows day 3 of the Haute route skinning up to the Col de La Chaux

From Col de la Chaux it's a boot pack up the ridge. Balloons marking the start of the junior FWT start

Slow and steady

The top is very rocky and exposed at the moment so we took an easier option traversing into the dog leg couloir.

It was very firm at the top. A bit softer on the lower mellower pitches

Candide Thovex

And there you have it, Le Bec des Rosses

It is properly steep and exposed at the top. Puts in context the skills and balls of the guys putting in big jumps on the upper cliff bands 💪💪💪

Great post. Despite being a nervous intermediate (who has only skied a couple of reds - by accident!) i have to say I think it's bonkers. But then I've done a free-fall parachute jump and my family thought I was bonkers too so I guess it's horses for courses. Having said that I could never get tired of watching steep skiers at work.

Watch the video on the link. It's 50-55 degrees at the top. When people like that say "oh god, it's steeper than I remember" it must be absolutely terrifying for mere mortals.

The first 50 or so mètres from the top is circa 55 degrees. A mate who skied it a few years again in great conditions (fresh powder) said he literally dropped 10m on each turn and it was mildly terrifying.

The shot with the front of my skis in is the dogleg couloir. It was probably 45 degrees for the first pitch and then dropped progressively as the slope opens up.

Snow conditions make a big difference. 45 degrees in powder is fun. On hard pack it's a totally different proposition and you must not fall

It looks horrible! I think I'll stick with the old powder snow. Sure, that looks difficult and all that, but not "great"!?

@BobinCH, good effort, looked like a great day !! and well written explanation, snow condition is the main consideration for me , in good snow there is so much more room for error/ adjustment whereas on firm / icy snow full commitment/ great skill is a minimum requirement on these lines .

Like most of the steep stuff in Verbier, it is only proper steep for the first few meters and then it flattens out a bit.

Thanks for the comments. Certainly would have been more fun in powder but it's sometimes just as satisfying making a plan come together in less than optimal conditions. And it's definitely a sterner test of the skills.

Hahaha. Not sur M. De Le Rue will appreciate you calling him out @Whitegoldilocks!

@BobinCH,

55 might be a bit rich for me, never gone over 52 and on hard icy snow, that was a bit sketch. Thought it didn't look 55 from the photos but I guess you don't get the camera out on the 55 section!

The problem with skiing steep 'no fall' runs is that one day you will fall.

I like the idea of a gnarsome life. Not sure that a long life is hugely attractive.

Here's a view of the gradient. The white line marks our route. The top of the central couloir is the steepest part at 55 degrees

The mellow view from above 😳

The traverse line is visible joining Sam Luebke's FWT (red) line down the dogleg

"In the summer, the Bec des Rosses is a rock climbing face"

Is that so? As a whole it isn't close to being steep enough for worthwhile rock climbing. I don't see any significantly large or steep crags in the photos. Nor can I find any references to rock climbing routes on Bec des Rosses.

@BobinCH, Nice TR, looks intimidating!

I skied it around this time of year in 2013, when I think the snowpack must have been deeper than it is right now. Seemed less rocky. Snow was quite soft and powdery so conditions were not far off optimal. We managed the central couloir from the top but to say we skied it would be an exaggeration, the first part was mostly sideslipping/stepping, a couple of kick turns and some jump turns!

Then we carried on almost exactly down the blue line above which was quite untracked as opposed to the red line which had been skied out by that point. Great memories, hope to ski it again soon - maybe next year.

BTW does anyone know why they didn't start the FWT from the top this year?

Too rocky/not enough snow.

A powder extreme guide posted a video from the top a few days later but he had to drop down the ridge and enter from the lookers right. And he said the first section was just a very hairy side slip between rocks, which I guess wouldn't have made for great TV viewing

Hats off sir. Didn't see this till now.

Looks steeper than anything I've tackled by a looooong shot. My rear is twitching like a bunny rabbits nose just looking at it.

Got a last shot in powder conditions today. First tracks in the ❤️ Zone

Alas in more sobering news a few minutes ahead of us a guy fell at the top of the dogleg and went all the way down. Was very lucky with just a busted shoulder. Wasn't wearing a helmet 😳
