It went by my house about 10 minutes ago heading into Grenoble. I find the whole thing a bit bizzare though - surely they should be skiing to the event over the mountains?
I would have thought the torch should be sponsored by the big drug laboratories that have brought so much to the Olympic spirit rather than tooth rotting Coke. Just a thought.

Apparently there have been local protests against that Coke sponsorship.

Olympic mean spirit and rip-off tickets:
Parents, husbands, wifes, children of competing athletes get no free tickets and no discounts.
With typical prices in the 75-150€ per event that is a flippin' disgrace.
The Olympic charter specifies that ticket prices should be comparable to a high level sporting event in the home country. Tickets to the Italian equivalent of the FA Cup final cost €40.
I rest the case for the prosecution on both points.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Those prices sound excessive, the tickets for the World Cup are from €35 and none of the winter sports can compare with soccer for worldwide appeal? What a rip off!

Friend of mine going for the last couple of days. This was decided, not on the cost of flights, hotel, food and general expenses;but by the ticket prices. He would have liked to go for longer, but couldn't afford to extend his mortgage

So, with hours to go before the opening ceremony in Turin, what are Britain's prospects for medals? These interviews, with Graham Bell (former British Olympic ski racer), and Simon Clegg ('Chef de Mission' of Team GB), sum up some prospects:
- Graham Bell reckons we have the best British ski team since Grenoble in 1968:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/winter_sports/4695882.stm
- Simon Clegg is being brutally realistic, with no specific medal predictions, but reckons we should come home with something:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/winter_sports/4698446.stm
So, what do we reckon? Medal(s) in skiing ... snowboarding ... curling ... ice skating ............ err, ice hockey?
|

Good job Graham is so positive! He is - or certainly was until recently - Chairman of the Alpine Executive of Snowsport GB.

Yes, Graham Bell deserves several medals for boyish enthusiasm - looking forward to his "rock and roll" helmet-cam run down the Sestriere course!
If medal prospects are being played down in the snow sports, there's a bit more optimism for the ice-based sports. This is from The Scotsman:
Quote: |
... David Murdoch and his men's curling rink are ranked third in the world and getting better with every competition they play. Former skeleton world champion Kristan Bromley was second in a World Cup race in Konigsee last month, and therefore looks like being a decent each-way bet to get among the medals.
If British women do end up on the podium, it will probably be either in the skeleton, where Shelley Rudman has two fourth places this season, or in the two-woman bob, as Nicola Minichello and Jackie Davies were third in a World Cup race in Altenberg last month. |
The famous modernisation programme for British skiing is nicknamed 'Bob', isn't it? Maybe that's the reason!

I forecast the Brits will finish above the French in the overall medals table (with a curling silver), and no alpine (or any other) podiums at all for the French....

PG Think you should go and catch the Ryanair flight I would put money on the French being way ahead , even if their medals come from Nordic (Poiree), X-disciplines, freestyle and .... ermmm

The Chemmy hoodies are very nice. I got one each for my daughter and her ski racing friend (and some personalised signed photos too....thank's Chemmy!).
We'll be cheering her on next week.
Send a PM to Chemmy's Yoda...he has contacts!

The Ethiopian Olympic Ski Team (Robel Teklemariam) - see above - is in early trouble.
Robel Teklemariam is one of the group of athletes suspended for five days for having a high red blood cell count.

- Two leading female downhillers have been injured. Lindsey Kildow - a US gold medal contender - and defending Olympic champion Carole Montillet-Carles, have both been stretchered off the downhill course at San Sicario after crashing during training. Kildow is reportedly receiving hospital treatment.
Racers' descriptions suggest that the terrain is particularly challenging, with a lot of rollers.

- Hermann Maier has reportedly left the Olympic area - and Italy - to speed up his recovery from the flu that is affecting his performance.

- Downhill training for the men's combined [which comprises downhill and and evening slalom events on Tuesday] took place today. Defending Olympic champion Kjetil Andre Aamodt of Norway, Bode Miller of the United States and Michael Walchhofer of Austria skipped the training. Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway was fastest.

- "Two-hour security queues" have been reported from yesterday's men's downhill, leading to racing veterans saying they had "never seen such a poor turnout," according to this report from Reuters. Security appears to be generally hampering spectator attendance.

- Giorgio Rocca has reportedly pulled out of the Olympic Super G and GS races to focus purely on the slalom, according to this BBC story:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/winter_sports/4715776.stm
- A £2 million meteorology centre, staffed by 10 meteorologists, has reportedly been installed by the Olympics organisers to provide snow and ice athletes with the latest data: temperature readings, wind speeds, humidity levels, multiple satellite images predicting minute changes ... and analysis of snow crystals. But many teams are choosing to trust their own judgements and instincts:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06045/655149.stm
- Samsung, one of the key Olympics sponsors is reported to have spent $13.5 million on corporate entertaining, including a luxurious "night party" at Courmayeur, involving "260 executives of its partner firms and their spouses". The company has opened a showroom in Turin, to promote interest in its cutting-edge gadgetry:
