Snowed all day, snowed all night...still snowing HARD
I wonder if skiing will be delayed for Avi Control etc.
Flippin bad luck for us....today we must drive home, a big (unmissable) event in the UK tomorrow

Indeed - the Les Saisies website (which being sad I'm checking from Hampshire  ) reports 70 cms at 2000m in the last 24 hours. Skiing will certainly be delayed for avi control in many resorts. Also for simply digging out the lifts!

My colleague has been in St Anton for the past week and has had several days of falling snow, including a heavy fall all last night

Crazy amount came down yesterday, biggest dump of the season in one day.

Is this usual snow fall in these areas for this time of year or is it an unusual event? Just interested.

@bambionskiis, it's a heavy fall for any time of the year, but no less common in early March than at any other time of the year, IME. This, I reckon, is the best time of the year to ski, and is low season in France (ie the four week school holiday period has finished). So low prices for accommodation and uncrowded pistes (at least, in those resorts where visitors are majority French - places like the 3V never seem uncrowded by my reckoning).

Ah right. I was thinking it was common for most places to be coming to a close by now and it was therefore highly unusual. Unfortunately we're stuck with school holidays (boo), otherwise this time would be a perfect time for me and hubby.

The season in Espace Killy runs into May.
The Alps often sees it's biggest snow accumulations with the equinox storms. There is now already enough snow to ensure it's a good Easter... but don't tell anyone that

The only French that go skiing at easter are the ones who can actually ski, or at the least majority of them. The rest of them look at you as if you've got two heads when you inform them where you're going for the holidays. I've just booked a week from the 8th of April myself

Mar and Apr are always the best times to ski in the Alps.
Going to be hot next week and melting will return. Make the most of it.

 Absolutely not. Even low resorts will be open for a while yet. People have some very skewed ideas about the ski season - and quite often, when resorts closed, it's because of lack of skiers, rather than lack of snow. Skiing at New Year or at half term is for those with plenty of money and absolutely no choice. Easter is often excellent, though if it's a late Easter you do need to choose your resort carefully (and preferably at the last minute).

From now till the end of the season, which in Val Thorens is early May, sees very good conditions and quiet conditions with no queues. Even Easter is usually not full.
I'm no weather expert but can remember as many big falls of snow in march and sometimes april as any other time of the year.
Tbh the only time resorts are rammed are xmas week/new year and february for various countries holidays. but that's the time that most poor saps with school age kids go skiing so they probably think it's always like that.

There are some well respected mountain guides who say winter doesn't start till March. You've got the biggest base to ski on

I'm glad I've read this now; I had no idea. I am indeed one of those poor saps who only ever sees the slopes
packed with other poor sap parents and kids being fleeced by the holiday industry! I don't wish my kids' childhoods away, but I'm certainly looking forward to skiing out of school holidays. Oh and the alps will be our little secret barshaker - I promise!

I drove from Troyes back to here today, left at 7.15 arrived at 1.15 with a couple of short stops. Rain turned to snow somewhere between Grenoble and Bourg d'Oisans and I didn't encounter snow on the road until i reached here. No problem at all really.

It's a sad fact that we haven't been able to work out a system where school holidays are spread out more evenly. You can't blame the tourist industry for making money when it can as it governments that gave created this situation.
From next year i'm thinking of either not renting out at all or renting during 4 peak weeks only.

Absolutely. Take Glencoe last year, we skied the last day, 30th April in amazing conditions (even flypaper was open). The only reason they closed was because they were loosing £5000 a day because no-one would go.
