Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fartbags: terminal decline or just a blip?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just returned from a great week in Cortina. Despite its fashionable reputation, I've always found it a surprisingly fertile area for playing Spot the Fartbag - until now . . . Last week's visit yielded only 7 sightings. Worse still, most were sober blue - not one Degre 7 and nothing in Motorway Maintenance yellow or encrusted with rhinestones.

During past visits, there has been a hard core of regulars - male and female - whose fashion sense remained firmly rooted in the same era as Cortina's lift system. What has become of them? Have the suits worn out or maybe the skiers themselves? Can the cause be attributed to Global warming or Brexit? Is the decline limited to Cortina and the Dolomites or part of a widespread trend? Can it be reversed?

Urgent research is needed. Any observations appreciated.

Off now to fumigate the SX92s and sharpen the red Atomic 210s.

I don't know how this can be, as I've never been to Cortina. Puzzled rolling eyes ....but I am in decline!

If I can help stop the terminal decline, I've an Event Fartbag, SX92s, 201 Force 9 3s, Bright Headband and Glacier Sunglasses (with removable leather side & nose sun guards), all lovingly preserved in pristine condition, waiting for the Second Coming. Madeye-Smiley snowHead

Having severely burned my nose once in the spring at St Anton, I wouldn't knock the return of nose sun guards.

Saw plenty while skiing in the Milky Way in January. Made me regret ditching mine, bought in Pindisports in the 70s.

AAhhh!
EVENT ski wear, my first ever one piece made out of a new fangled invention called goretex... a lovely shade of dark blue and fantastic quality, should never had sold it on....
There is a business in the french alps that rents this sort of stuff out, apparently the "yoof" wear them for laughs!!

Ps, don't knock sun nose guards, I had to import mine from the USA, to protect my poor snozzle from further attacks of BCCs or worse!

Mine is Blue up to the middle, where it has a yellow strip separating it from the white upper. It was bought because I saw Ali Ross wearing one in "How we learned to ski" and was purchased in Du Sport, on the Kings Road in London.....I had class in those days.

The Glacier Sunglasses are darkened at the top and bottom of the lens, to help stop glare from above (sky) and below (snow). This leaves a lighter strip across the middle of the lens that you mostly looked through. Madeye-Smiley

Cortina is all about Bogner spotting. Or knob spotting as we say in the UK.

I'll admit to Nevica (dark blue with neon highlights) and Degree 7 (more muted purple/blue) fartbags back in the day. However, I've been seeing at least one 'modern' shell fatbag a day, usually by Sweet Protection or Norrona.

You shut up, my late lamented Bogner onesie was so, so beautiful. Plain navy, super-elegant. And it lasted me for about 15 seasons, so it proved to be an excellent investment.

Long time reader of these message boards but now is the time to post as this is a subject close to my heart. I love 80's fashion hence I love onesies and haven't skied in anything else for years. Between me and a friend we've amassed a decent collection which have been worn all over Europe and the US. I quite simply prefer them to modern ski clothing with the upside being lots of Germans and Dutch buy you beer and schnapps at apres ski! I've tried to upload some photos below, hope they work! Cheers.

extra points for the bum bag - is that called wearing it 'fakey' , or possibly crotchside?

Really needs some red SX-91/92's though - and I hear the monoski is due back ...

Bought mine at Badminton Horse trials (Yes yes I know, my wife made me go and Eevnt had a trade stand selling mostly riding jackets but I spotted the skisuit, cost of it ensured that was last time my wife made me go to BHT!!!)
funnily enough, have a pair of glacier sunglasses in backpack even now, usually too dark to wear, even in the brightest sunlight!!!!

(still, if they are good enough for james bond to wear, then they are good enough for me!) Laughing

There was a veritable catwalk of onesies in the French Pyrenees last week (half term in the south of France)... a joy to behold.

And not just one, but three, monoskis. It was a big moment for me, because it was the first time that I've ever seen one in the wild. And one of the monoskiers was a onesie-wearer. Happy days.

It's a little further to drive to go skiing across the border to the French side, but it's always justifiable for the cultural interchange wink

Absolutely loads in France in the holidays. Owned from new and worn with no irony. French attitude is why replace things if they still work OK. I skied with a french woman for 2 days last week, 10 year old Rossignol skis and even older rear entry boots. Fantastic skier though, far better than me. She took the wee wee out of my gear addiction, I could hardly argue.

I saw a couple in their 50s wearing matching his and hers - multicoloured and patterned. They looked original. I detected no irony something I think @supergreg, may be guilty of Very Happy

But I'm disappointed by the idea of Cortina being fartbag central. I've never been but in my imagination its full of delightful young ladies wearing fur trimmed skating outfits a la Diana Rigg in OHMSS. I'm quite upset!

For a more modern take on the skiing onsie, last month's GQ had an advert for this company:-

Ah the fartbag, spotted a few in Madonna, usually on older people, ( older than me that is which is really saying something) who could bomb down runs like they were born on skis, so no complaints from me.
I had two in the past a yellow and black one, ( which looked like a two piece) and a silver descente one, which I am sure I could be still wearing........ however I now think I looked like I was ready for the oven, Shocked

@jedster - No irony on my part but I can understand why people might think that! I don't own any modern ski clothes as I prefer the style and find more practical the onesie! Same with the bumbag, much more convenient than wearing a bulky backpack!

Of course there is a bit of fun involved as well but that is why I go skiing - to enjoy myself and have a good time - and not to take myself too seriously. The fact you barely pay for a beer in the apres ski bars is an added bonus! Wink

I've never had a "one piece".
My misses had one ...

Anyway at the End of Season Bash last season there was "Jackie Day" big party at the "knife & fork" and a big end of season party all over town in the evening, all the guys & gals were wearing retro stuff.
It was a night that I could wear my Nevica colour collision smock with pride.

I bumped into a young lady who was wearing almost the same "one piece" as my misses had...
I asked her, "Is that your mothers?"
She answered, "No its my grandmothers Little Angel "

Haha, @honved, we had a couple of nights in the Hinterhagalm - had a good dance the first night but the mass of Dutch/ Scandinavians chanting that stupid darts/ White Stripes song ruined it, could see the band were pissed off! The second night we were too late after happy hour at Bergers so it was packed.
We are usually mistaken for Germans or Dutch, nothing new there! Wink

My mate bought a skiing onesie from Red7SKiWear. He wore it for the first time on our trip in Verbier last week. He said it was great in the powder and really comfortable. He looked wicked in it and had a load of people asking about it. I reckon it's probably too warm for anyone thinking of touring mind, but I guess there are shoulder straps. I'm going to get one, but I'm waiting for the navy to be released next season!
