Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Verbier touring conditions and routes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello all,

I'd planned a powder/touring trip next weekend with da boiz, 2 days Verbier/ 2 days Cham. However reports from Chamonix right now suggest Snow Drought Round 2 has struck and this time it's might be terminal... I know it's a week away, but a reliable source tells me a 'snowmageddon' is required to bring things back from the brink.

I don't know Verbier, but my intentions in Chamonix were to show my mates some of the classic day tours and/or steeps. I'm now thinking of sacking it and staying in Verbier for the entirety.

How are conditions right now? And can anyone give me a run down on Verbier steep skiing?

Or should we forget it and bring the park skis?

Thanks

Check out the forecast for La Grave next week and the weekend 4th/ 5th are you sure Verbier is dry as it looks?
A big storm, and as ever 50km either way can make a drastic difference!

Edit: just looked at Verbier and that looks good as well!

I have no idea about Verbier conditions tbh.

Like I say, I don't know the place bar a single day piste bashing.

Where do the big boys ski? When is the Bec des Rosses generally in condition?

Get on instagram. The Brit crew (and others) in Cham are putting down once in a lifetime lines atm. No powder, but LOTS of adventure

@clarky999, I'm convinced no-ones had any fun on skis since I was last out 2 weeks ago, but feel free to prove me wrong!

Hi,
Like most of the alps we all need snow. The pistes are ok off piste you would have to do some miles to find some good stuff to play in...

Snow is forecast for Mardi Gras but it may blow away,,,,,,(28/2)

@Fergus, my mountain guide friend has been having a load of powdery fun just off the Grands Montets top bin the last few days

...and is convinced there's a 50cm dump inbound Wednesday...

But not wanting to be rude... I'd suggest a guide for both spots.

I was thinking about the NE couloir du Capucin off the col du Tacul, Gervasutti Couloir (Tour Ronde), Chevallier Couloir, Col des Cristaux or maybe even the Droites. Aiguille d'Argentiere is getting a lot of traffic at the moment so might be an option.

I'd consider a guide in Verbier but we'd rather not have to.

Also, yes forecast is looking promising snowHead

Mont Fort and Mont Gelé were skiing well yesterday after the 10cm of fresh on Friday. Snow depths off piste must be about 50cm shy of normal so need to be careful of rocks. Some pics in Verbier thread. Not seen any tracks on the Bec. If the promised snow arrives could be transformed by next weekend. We're looking at a La Grave trip...

@Fergus, I am slightly surprised, although in fairness, and even being reasonably local I am slightly also surprised by how good conditions are, ...

that if you are a skilled enough mountaineer to be skiing such routes, that you can't make a reasonable inference based on available info as to snow...

Or am I being harsh? This is not intended as any sort of criticism. On reflection, it does seem that unless you are on the spot, it's actually really hard to establish how promising the snowpack might or might not be.

True, but I am aware that there hasn't been serious snowfall since I was last out a fortnight ago, and generally it's been quite a dry winter. (Yesterday looked like it was a good day, I'll give you that).

I am quite surprised at the kick-back above as I thought my finger was fairly on the pulse regarding conditions. While I know there will always be something to ski, I want to ski good snow hence my indecision of whether to stay in Verbier. Regardless, it's too early to make a decision.

My main intention of this thread was to find sources of information regarding Verbier ski-touring. BobinCH, I appreciate the updates. Keep them coming! A La Grave trip would be a dream, but not this time round!

@Fergus, I thought I'd been clear that I wasn't intending as a kick back and I'm sorry if it came across cattiet than intended.

Your question has bedm stimulating a log of Sunday morning musing in my head as to just how difficult it is to guage conditions based on available info. For me and my client audience hard enough to guage piste conditions based on what one must assume are deliberately targeted reports.

Let alone judging likely skiability of well off pistes routes where the marginal degree of sketchiness can lead to wildly different outcomes.

My advice is to be very careful on the N/NE aspect slopes of 30+ degrees in Verbier at the mo. We were there ~2weeks ago on a guided week, and our group alone were involved in 4 slides in 3 days..... for all of them the official ava risk rating in the resort was only 3.

if u want more details of same, have a look at weathercams '.....9 lives' thread
