Poster: A snowHead

Article in Financial Times on Saturday (sorry can't seem to post link). A new airline dedicated to the winter sports market. PowdAir is due to begin flights from 6 regional airports to Sion, Valais. They plan to use the Fokker 100 aircraft flying from Thursday to Mondays. Apparently seats will be between £99 and £150 one way including ski carriage. The airline have put up a survey on their website to see what regional airports would be in demand.

That's expensive, particularly if you don't need the ski carriage. We average £35 per sector LGW to GVA flying Friday and Sunday.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Steve Sparks, I agree with you, my OH has got a £40 flight with BA tomorrow to London last minute. But factor in the 54 franc rail fare to Sion and the fact some of these more provincial airports are a bit more pricey and some may want ski carriage and its do-able. Way cheaper that that Swiss flight they're trialling to Sion atm.

The more choice the better and very interesting for a short break Monday to Friday or a weekend. Welcome PowdAir.

@Steve Sparks, That's OK if you live in the south where there are a huge number of flights through the week. Further north it would be very welcome.

@chocksaway, Agreed, many people I have spoken to about it are hoping it goes ahead. My neighbour here goes back to Leeds regularly and the flights are very erratic to and from there this year.

This is a well come addition, I travel frequently to Valais for skiing trips. But I have one question. How will you be able to get to the nearby resorts from Sion Airport? Is it easy to get to the railway line and then get the Post Bus up? (Although these generally stop running at 19.00). Is car hire possible at Sion Airport or is it private taxis, which may negate any savings on the flight costs?

Tickets go on sale on 6 June 17. The website is still very short on detail but there is an eclectic mix of destinations. The airline forums seem to think the aircraft will be an Airbus 319, so more seats. Powdair will not actually operate the aircraft, it is likely to be on an ACMI basis (more commonly known as wet lease) so they are effectively a travel agency. The extra choice is welcome, but the weather minima for landing and take off are probably as restrictive or maybe worse than Chambery, caveat emptor.
