Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Olympic fever?

What Olympic fever? There seems to be a distinct lack of threads with any Olympic news/feel to it. Anybody out there excited about the games starting in just over a week's time? Anybody going?

tessaventer, Yes it is a bit strange to me as well ... could be that people are focused on thier own sliding?

I will avidly watch everything I can ( and look out for the GB competitors) .. Biathlon, Nordic combined ... luge etc although I will probably pass on all the "pretty' skating ..

As mentioned on another thread, the Radio Times is really splashing on it, if you want to get psyched up. There's a choice of (I think) four alternative magazine covers - choose your favourite sport - which is fun.

I'm not really bothered about it. I'll watch it if any of it is on "normal" tv, especially the bobsleigh events but it doesn't grab me like the summer Olympics.

I would be getting far more excited about it, if it didn't clash with half term, and therefore me going skiing myself!!

For me watching winter sports on telly is always a bit dissappointing as it doesn't convey properly the difficulty level, and skill of the athletes. The slopes all look flat (when you know that they're extremely steep), the bobsleigh looks as if any four duffers could get in it and be spat out at the bottom, the skeleton bob just looks like it's a part of the mental health act, the ski jumping is interesting for one or two competitors, then it all gets a bit repetitive.

I think that the more new school disciplines are the way forward in televised snow sports - skier cross (langlaufcross being the best), big air competitions, and extreme freeriding. All far more interesting, exciting, and rewarding to watch in my opinion.

I'm quite prejudiced against sports where winners get decided subjectively by judges. Anyone else feel this way?

DavidS, Yes ! True for all so-called 'sports' like that. I was about to reply to Kramer in a similar vein. I saw some 'Snowboarding' 1/4 pipe?? from Avoriaz last week .... so boring I might as well have watched paint dry ! Marked by judges again ..

I disagree I find W-Sports on TV fun .. oh well.. and I thought that 3 of the 4-man Bob teams had to be mentally deranged anyway !

DavidS, I get your point, but unless you're going to judge everything on speed, or length or height, how do you judge events like ice-skating, gymnastics? Puzzled I think it would be a pity to lose these altogether.

I prefer the Winter Olympics to the Summer Olympics, which isn't saying much. Short track ice skating is a laugh, and the sliding events (luge and so on) ar equite good. Quite what ice dance or whatever it's called is doing there is anybody's guess, though.

Winter Olympics are way more fun than summer, I guess that's because I prefer winter sports. They're just more awesome. They're more 'dangerous' and I think there's more adrenaline, IMHO. My favorite ? LUGE http://www.olympic.org/luge-singles-men
