Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Magnetic Ski Racks?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Has anybody used magnetic mounted ski racks for taking two sets of skis on top of a car?

I have searched the discussions on it, and I certainly wouldn't use it for driving to the alps, but thinking of in the UK driving to the airport (including motorways)?

They certainly look and easy option but slightly nervous at the same time.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Which style were they? We have found several which mount the skis with different orientation and styles, and different mechanisms for sides attaching them to the into the doors to ensure no side slip.

However that is very encouraging.

We wouldn't need them if the kids didn't fight so much when forced to sits side by side with the two-third split put down. rolling eyes

Yes we have used the magnetic ski rack to drive to the Alps (863 miles each way) and back numerous times. No problems at all. All your problems are psychological. I could dig out the make and a photo if you were interested. We actually bought them from Decathlon in Albertville.

It may sound obvious, but make sure your roof is magnetic before using. We reserved a ski rack with a rental car from, I think, Chambery airport, and some of the cars available were Peugeots, with largely glass roofs. I'm not sure if the racks provided were magnetic or suction, because the skis fitted inside anyway.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

We used one of these for a few seasons on our Punto.
Initially the base of square magnetic material mounted on semi-flexible square worked really well, but as it aged and became less flexible the surface area in contact with the curved roof was reduced - however it continued to work fine, until the hinge mechanism rusted.
Now we just use a ski box with some holes drilled in the bottom for drainage, no faffing around with straps or similar.
We just chuck the snowboards in there - job done.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@NickyJ, I was dubious when first given magnetic ski racks. But they've worked fine on several rental cars in the alps, including at autoroute speeds. Just stuck on roof with magnet, no other fixings or straps to vehicle.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

No problems with scratching the paint? Would you be content with them 800 miles each way on your own car?

Ensure roof and magnetic plates are clean, then no issue with scratches. They are on my own car.

They are Blitz Rack System. They were 39.95 euros from Intersport. Carry 2 pairs of ski's. An excellent buy. The product number is 635008-K51-001-01
