Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Witnessed the aftermath of a massive avalanche yesterday

Yesterday I took a gang of "geezonaires" along with Les Chiens for a hike up to the Refuge Napoleon just below the Col d'Izoard.

I skinned up so I could go up to the Col and then skied back down to meet them for lunch.

Then after lunch you borrow the refuge's luges and slide back down the 7km whilst I'd stay on my skis filming them, all jolly good fun!

However during lunch there was quite a commotion as people got up from the tables to look out of the windows.

There had been massive slide (evidently earlier) and the rescue heli was working the area and then dropped a search team in.

I was just under three km away so no way could I offer any assistance if it turned into a major manual search.

It is a very popular ski tour area and there were visible tracks into the slide, but were they old ones

The slide

Now zoomed in - on right of slide that is one of the rescue team and tiny dot below him is his dog - that's a good 500m across !

Friend from yesterday who was with us, just sent me this picture, timed at 12:57 as I was still climbing up to the Col from the Rrefuge which plainly shows that the avalanche had not taken place yet.

About 100 meters across, and 50cm deep at the crown.

Looking under 'Home', 'Features', 'Tour Guide' and 'Ski Blog' of your site but not seeing the promised details. Could you supply a quick update here please. Like many snowHeads know people who call this their home and am a little concerned. Thanks.

@Jude1, it's on the February blog page http://www.stylealtitude.com/february,-2017-ski-blog.html and there's a news report here http://dici.fr/actu/2017/02/01/hautes-alpes-une-grosse-avalanche-se-declenche-col-izoard-aucune-victime-964967.

There were no victims.

Yes OH moved the article to the February blog as @Hells Bells, rightly points out, but failed to put a link to it.

Got caught in a slide yesterday (plaque friable: piégeuse car d'aspect poudreux) and had a very near miss, more here http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=130216

Now off games with a badly strained knee for hopefully just the week and that it's not worst, though it all could have been so much worse!

@davidof, I've very roughly measured it and it is at least 400m as it's widest point.
