Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Friend of mine just booked 3hr beginner lesson at Milton Keynes, she's never skied before and looking to get a bit of on snow experience before we go on our trip in march. Has anyone done this 3hr block? How was it? What did you achieve by the end? She's hoping to get to basic turns by the end, but I'm not sure if progression is that quick?? Anyone? Cheers

My OH did the 3hr fast track lesson at Tamworth a few years back, which I think is similar. Got the "boring" bits out of the way (how to put skis on, stepping up the mountain etc) and then basic skiing with snowplough turns. Depends how you get on, as by the end he and a few others were making it down from the top (albeit very slowly!), whereas others were still getting off halfway and advised to take the 2nd fast track lesson to reach the "recreational standard". Definitely gave him an head start on the (real) piste and he got bumped up from beginner's group. Enjoy!
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Their combined lessons, which are 3 hrs for adults, are good in that you get more skiing in. It is worth checking whether it's 3 hours of lessons or 2.5 hours plus 1/2 hour break as that's what they've done previously. If it's 2.5 hours it actually works out cheaper to do single lessons as they are now all 90 minutes where levels 2 to 5 were 60 minutes before (but were cheaper). Why a combined lesson would cost more I don't really know, you'd normally expect to pay a bit less. I prefer the 3 hour lessons to the whole day, I did the whole day a few years ago and found it hard work even though I was pretty fit from doing other sports, I wouldn't do the whole day again as a beginner.
If she does the combined 1&2 she should be doing basic turns on the nursery slope by the end of the session. Snozone don't like their instructors (or coaches as they call them now) to move on further even if the customers are up to it so the whole session will normally be on the nursery slope. I have seen instructors take them onto the main slope but I've also heard them being told that they shouldn't. It's going to depend on her and to a certain extent the instructor, some seem better than others at helping people to progress.

My wife and I did them a while back and I highly recommend them - as said previously it gets the simple, boring bits out of the way so you can progress much faster on the mountain.
I think progression is down to the individual, my wife and I were getting towards parallel turns after the 3hrs (she was better than me which was annoying). We then did 3 x 2hr private ski lessons in France and were both happy going down steep reds etc by the end of our long weekend. We'd also caught the skiing bug BIG time.
On the other hand, I have a friend who has been on a full days tuition at MK along with several boys trips with me and he still can't ski at all (a mixture of fear and hangover being a huge barrier to his progression). If she is happy to fall over, look silly whilst learning and push herself I'm sure she'll be absolutely fine.
