Anyone seen this scary footage of a snowboarder in an avalanche at Whistler, yesterday I think.
Scary to watch (not sure I've seen go pro footage in an avalanche before) never mind be caught up in, guy thankfully ok but found the very last part with the would be 'rescuer' slightly funny, sorry.https://www.facebook.com/tom.oye.9/videos/1364035546950637/
Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

So those air bags DO work...
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Don't know much about airbags, is that him having the wherewithall to pull a cord a second or two into the slide?
I am in whistler at the moment and there is a lot of talk about this video, and also a commentary from a mountain expert with a few pointers about what they did correct but also what they did wrong. Can't find the link but main point was they were on a wind blown face that should have been tested before entering the face. Having said that it's interesting watching and just pleased he was ok.
Check out his Facebook profile, looks like he likes the outdoor activities.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

And for those of you that wouldn't trust a jet force airbag, well it worked in this occasion.
If he was after a morning adrenaline rush he certainly got one. Not a huge avalanche but glad he had his airbag on and the wherewithal to deploy it, could have been a very different result.
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

No mention about the condition of his undergarments.

What's the intermittent whine noise? Airbag pump? I'm surprised it operates more than just once, I'd always imagined them like a single discharge.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

GlasgowCyclops, that certainly is - thanks for posting.
Also makes it clear that it wasn't in Whistler, although many people think it was in bounds there.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

It's a fan operated airbag similar to a Jetforce model (see demo here: http://youtube.com/v/HPOMm2fO1_Q). After the initial inflation they pulse to keep the bag inflated.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

The whole of BC was pretty wind hammered earlier. That layer is in there. In the Whistler valley the wind direction was different from normal, so not quite so easy to predict what it would do. I was riding across the valley up to the day before. It was harder than you'd expect to predict where the slab was precisely. However we saw nothing anything like that scale in the days before.
All of the ridges were pounded by the wind there: even when the slope itself was good, the top sections were all slab.
I like the Jet Force concept better than the others. However it's not possible to say what would have happened without it in this case.
