Just round the corner from the top of Cime de Caron Val Thorens above Orelle / 4th Valley before a descent into the Maurianne Valley with a skin out to the top of the Orelle gondola .

This area has been inaccessible recently (well, not without some considerable effort) but it's okay now.

@thecramps has it. Whiteface mountain, host of the alpine events for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. It's in upstate New York.
How did you get it? Not from that video, I imagine.

I saw a you tube vid about skiing in US a while ago while researching for a potential skiing trip, and I remember a shot very similar to the picture of yours with that wedge cut from the mountain to make the small flat. I couldn't though remember where it was, but then you said about being used in international competition and it's not Beaver Creek, and I didn't think Killington, and as Aspen and Whistler had gone, I googled past international downhill events in the US and there it was. I looked on YouTube for a vid, and there he was, the always exciting Harti Weirather.
Stick another one up. I haven't got anything to hand right now.

I love hearing people's reasoning. I don't think I'd have remembered the wedge you're talking about.
Here's another. It's a lot easier, so I want the name of the run I'm standing on.

@thelem, I remembered it because it's clearly man made. I wondered if it was a mine spoil heap (there is a few around here from mines and railway tunnels) or if it was made for the olympics, and if so, who let them.

Orange piste?

@thelem, this is Val d'Isere, from the La Daille sector. As for the run... I would hazard a guess at Triffollet?

I knew that wouldn't take long.
@denfinella gets the honours, it is indeed Triffollet.

Guessed Triffolet because 1. there's snowmaking going on to skier's right (so it can't be Orange, as it's the furthest right of the La Daille pistes), and 2. it appears to be on skier's left of the little valley that most of the pistes go down.

Shadows suggest a southwest aspect, trees more like the southern Alps / Italy, lots of snow so probably the western side of the Italian Alps.
A wild guess would be somewhere in the Aosta Valley - Gressoney la Trinite?

Probably too easy to name the background range but to crank it up tell me where I took it from and name the mountain with the piste in the middle distance?
