Slightly OT not that I would have known for sure but I didn't say Japan as I somehow imagined that they would never have such old looking chairlifts. I've never been but just thought it would all be very modern and hi-tech?

@robboj, it really isn't. I've only been twice, but whilst there have skied seven areas in two regions.
You'll find that nearly all the uplift is antiquated by euro standards.

On the contrary - Japan has some of the oldest lift infrastructure I've ever seen. There are still a number of single seater chairs even in the major resorts like Niseko. There are a few places with modern high speed quads, but you'll rarely see the big 6-8 seater covered chairs that you get in major European/US resorts.
The same is true in daily life in Japan. Most people assume it's super hi tech and modern, but not always the case. Banking and admin is notoriously slow. I would regularly receive important work documents by fax!
