I usually pack these in with my hold luggage, or slip them into the ski bag. Has anyone taken probes and shovels on a flight in carry on / hand luggage?

I'd be very surprised if you'd be allowed either of then in hand luggage these days.

I don't think they are explicitly banned (unlike ski poles, which are), but I would be surprised if you got them through.
If you are travelling light but need these with you it might be economical to post them, or get someone else to put them in luggage perhaps? Failing that they can be hired in a few places.

Even though they are not specifically mentioned in the Sports section I think you can interpolate that it is unlikely that you would get these items through - given the catchall bold warning under para 1 that anything considered dangerous by staff can be rejected.

best avoided - i got a grumpy official in Munich airport a few years who made me go back and check shovel + probe in.
on the way out it had been ok.

Imagine it. You cannot take that blunt tiny knife from the restaurant on the plane but please feel free to carry a shovel as they pose no threat what so ever. 
Take it and lose it so not worth chancing it.

Coming back through either Geneva or Chambery one year with a telescopic pole (not a probe) in hand luggage I had to remove it and have it checked but they allowed it through. Given the current climate I wouldn't risk it these days though, best to put them in your hold luggage.

I carry a Delkin sectional carbon fibre GoPro pole which is longer than most ski poles at 1.5m... Not as spear-like as a probe but not that different.

Last month as I back came through chambery airport there were notices up and check-in staff stating that even plastic selfie sticks are not allowed in hand luggage.
Nothing of the sort on the way out at Manchester.

I packed my Avi shovel into my hand luggage. Was OK on the BA flight out of Heathwow but the Italians wouldn't let me carry it back to UK. Had to pay extra hold bag charge. V expensive, won't do it again!

Sounds like the bottom line is that you might get away with it in some airports but not others. Rather than risk losing some moderately expensive kit I'd def pack with skis or other hold baggage.

Well some first hand experience from today. Flying from Gatwick South Terminal to Milan for a weekend at Alagna. Security would not let me take the shovel in my carry on suitcase. Don't have checked bags so now I don't have a shovel. security manager told me shovels are considered a tool and tools are not allowed in carry on. Expensive lesson!

Bob, you are correct, I think. But I'll get a shovel there and leave it with a friend to bring back.
More importantly just checked and almost all lifts at Alagna are closed due to strong winds! Just can't win somedays!

@tangowaggon, wont be long before shovels can be bought in duty free if the airport can sniff out a potential profit, though you would not be able to bring it back though!!!!!
its a bit like the extortionate cost of a bottle of water airside, I can understand the point of it, but it p!!!!s me off no end when you are ripped off because of it!!!
