Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any suggestions on how to start a very tall, but not very strong little girl to start skiing. Have the boots, short skiis, piste baby level in back garden and do not want to frighten her

Hope the right people read this, and to say hope all is well.

wow - snow in the garden - so jealous - just got back from austria! How old is she? Is she usually nervous or you just want to be extra careful?

Anyway if you think she is liable to be scared easily then start very gently with very short sessions - 15minutes to start with, building up to no more to 30minutes.

First, sliding games on the flat - just walking, shuffling, jumping up and down, touch your toes, crouch down, touch your head etc until she is happy and comfortable on skis.

Then the same exercises on a shallow slope with one person to help her up and turn her round and another to catch her at the bottom! Keep her distracted with lots of games like follow me, where she has to do whatever you do (touch your head, hold out your arms)

If she gets scared walking/skiing backwards in front of her may help.

Works well with nervous kids, or those with co-ordination issues!

Will leave others more qualified to talk about introducing snow plough etc

Good luck!

Welcome binka, just remember that what ever you do decide to try it is very important to keep it fun and like 'play', then you will build confidence and enthusiasm. How old is she?

binka, Welcome to Snowheads. As ajhainey, said, start not skiing - on the flat. You don't say how old/tall she is. It does sound as though she's quite young though. Is she weak because she's tall? does she normally need assistance with her muscles? Lots of questions spring to mind! However, if you follow the advice above, you should be fine. In the UK there are special clubs for skiers with problems, there must be more of these in Austria, but I don't have any details. You could google for the Austrian Ski Instructors' Association (again, I don't know the official name) and write to them. They would know where to get the very best local help and advice.
