But anyway, otherwise, it's actually possible to get ski boots plus enough clothes to ski into hand baggage. That's what I'd do. Then, if your skis / boards don't make it out there, just hire them. The issue I wasn't clear about is who's responsible if they fail let you check in your gear - I'm fairly sure it's the airline, although the last time my stuff was stuck in LHR they'd accepted it, which is different.
I believe EU rules don't apply to strike action, which is interesting.

But my answer would have been: pack what you need in hand baggage, travel light, and hope for the best. It almost always works out.
