Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

PDS late Jan ? Chatel / Switzerland

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We have skied in the PDS many times but always been in March where snow depths have been good due to the season long accumulation. obviously its that age old question and I realise none of us can predict the weather but want to get the collective wisdon of folk on here....we are looking at staying in Montriond and accessing the ski area via the Ardent lift / Linderets area. The main reason is that we want to explore the Swiss resorts and Chatel area as we have focussed on Les Gets / Morzine in the past. We travel on 28th Jan. what would your opinion be on the likelihood of rain due to the low altitude and poor snow over on the Swiss side. I also see there is a new lift link in Chatel removing the need for the bus link across the town. Our alternative is to just go to La Tania and have the 3V at our disposal. thanks in anticipation for your input.

My theory is that the week you have chosen has a number of benefits, namely it will have snowed by then (unlike Xmas), its generally cold sometimes too cold and its the last week you can ski crowd free before the vacances start. Its been our preferred week for Chatel during the last 25 years and I ve never been overly worried about rain. But..... it is the mountains Smile

Let's face it the end of Jan's more or less mid-season so you can reasonably expect snow.

And IF the PdS doesn't have snow then, what makes you think La Tania or 3V would have any either...

@BergenBergen, the "week before the vacances start" is the reason we always go away that week Smile. we are used to the cold - not ideal but we are prepared with extra clothes, facemasks, glove liners, boot heaters etc all ready just in case.

@Mjit, my logic is that in the 3V there are more higher pistes and can always rely on Val thorens to have snow. PDS has the slopes above avoriaz but after that most of it is lower than 3V...saying that I am aware that some of the low down pasture in PDS requires less snow to make it skiable than rock strewn higher slopes in 3V.

thanks for your views...all useful info to help us make our decision. Ideally we would wait until after xmas and go with a last minute deal but might then not have a much choice of resort

Pds will be fantastic that time of year. And yep, the new link to the Super Chatel area works well. Deffo do the PdS 'Circuit" Lindarets > Linga > Super Chatel > Morgins > Chapoussin > Les Crossets > Avoriaz > Lindarets for a good day out. Also worth a chilled day out is St Jean d'Aulp (Grande Terche/Roc d'enfer) if you have transport it only a 15 min drive from Linderets and this can also be done via buses and navettes. St Jean d'Aulp is great little resort that is normally mega quiet and covered as part of the PdS pass. St Jean d'Aulp has a sweet little circuit that can be smashed out in half a day to la Cheverie or done slower at a more relaxed pace
