Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Colles fracture, any advice ?

Disaster !!! I was determined after my intermediary skiing lasting the last decade to make progress this year. Kids moved out, we have booked 3 weeks skiing, hoping tomove to the next level.
Since the summer I have been working hard at my fitness, lost weight and felt great.
So great in fact that I made the foolish decision to start playing football again, anyway on Wednesday night turns out I broke the radius bone near the wrist (colles fracture)
The good news is that it is not displaced, a clean enough break all the way through the bone. I see the orthopedic doctor on Monday at 9,30am but just wondered if anyone had any knowledge or reassurance to offer.
We leave for our holiday on the 5th January, just over 4 weeks after my appointment next Monday.
I am hoping that the cast will be just off and I can ski with a wrist guard. Puzzled

@saintstephen,
I've skied a week with my arm in a cast (clean break half way up radius). That was about a month the break. Apparently I should have informed the insurance company but it didn't occur to me. Everything went well, I just took it fairly carefully.

I broke mine (radius, ulna and scaphoid) in November 2007, had a cast for 6 weeks and a futura splint for a further 2 weeks with 6 sessions of physio after that. Mine was slightly displaced and needed reduction under local at the time, and was a multiple fracture so a worse case than yours by the sounds of it.

@saintstephen,
I think 6 weeks is pretty standard for most adult breaks.

As long as you can get your jacket on you'll be OK wink

If they out a cast on which goes past your wrist ask them to "mould" the cast around a ski pole,, they do it in italy !!!

Cast generally on for a minimum of 6 weeks if no surgery involved and then splint for a few more weeks. Wife # her wrist in December and it required surgery. She skied in the Feb half term with no issues - main thing is not to fall on it again!!! Just saying.

A couple of days after I had my cast off an automatic train door closed as I got on and banged me right on top of the break. I was in agony for hours. Fortunately no damage done but it hurt a whole lot more than the original accident.

My stepson who is a ski instructor certainly skied with a fractured wrist a couple of seasons ago. I think it was a daily simple undisplaced one. I'd go for it!

Had the same fracture about 20 years ago. I was skiing at the time and it did not hurt that much - a GP I was skiing with thought it was probably a scaphoid fracture, and just helped me strap it up. Didn't get it x-rayed until I got home about 5 days later, which diagnosed the true nature and ended up with it in a short cast. I went skiing with it in a cast (didn't ask the medics or the insurance company) for 4 weeks with it in a cast. I skied the Valle Blanche with it in the cast. The 6 weeks expired whilst I was away, so I removed the cast myself with nail scissors and put a neoprene brace on it and carried on skiing on it. Only had one problem and that was stumbling in the apartment block I was staying in and falling on it - curiously no alcohol involved. It hurt like hell and made me feel sick and I did not ski the day after - I think as a direct result of this I ended up with some arthritis in the wrist. I also had to find an excessively large pair of ski mitts to go over the cast. Clearly going skiing with your arm in a cast is a stupid thing to do (I've been told so so many times it must be true) - but in my somewhat coloured view of the world not skiing is even more stupid.

My daughter broke her hand playing rugby the same amount of time before our ski holiday. The physiotherapist made a lovely moulded cast that left her fingers free to hold a pole. She still skied better than the rest of us !!!

Check whether you can fly with a cast. If necessary, see if you can have a cast put on now and replaced with strapping before the flight

I should have added it was removable too.

The consultant said my daughter couldn't ski the other Easter when she did hers, but she did do it properly. Snapped the radius and the ulna Skullie

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply, turns out that the doctor said it was going to be 6 weeks just like the above posters indicated.
He did however I agree to see me the day before I fly away and take another X-ray
He may then remove the cast for a splint or recast the arm for a slightly smaller one, at this stage I think it may be better to leave it cast on although the doctor did say he would have to cut it to allow me to fly.

A couple of weeks in the cast now and my arm is starting to feel alot better, still have over two weeks before I go back to the doctor so I'm 50 50 as to whether I should request for the cast to be taken off and ski with a splint or maybe get a more manageable cast fitted.

I heard of someone asking for their cast to be moulded to take a beer glass, not a ski pole Puzzled
