Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone flown with ski poles as carry on? Know if it's possible?

Not done it, or ever seen anyone, but doubt it, due to being pointy articles. Why would you want to anyways ?

I assume airlines must have policies for them though, because of hiking poles, walking sticks etc.

Really don't want to pay €40 for ski carriage, just for a pair of poles

@moseyp, can hire poles wherever you are going? If you are hiring skis it will be included anyway. I had to hire poles once, I think I was charged about 5 CHF for the week.

They don't allow walking sticks. Both my Mum+Dad have had to hand them over check-in as hold luggage. They were then given wheel chairs (though Ryanair charged for the chair). Can't see ski poles getting through.

Ask someone at the airport if they'll put them in their ski bag for the flight. snowHead

thanks @adithorp, don't suppose you know how much they charged - was it the full price of a checked bag? Think that's about €20 or €30 with Ryanair - still a bit of a pain for such a small item

was nearly going to ask the same question... as the OP that is.
are collapsible walking poles OK?
seems the answer is probably no.

@andy, from what I can see online collapsible walking poles are fine because they can go inside your carry on bag. there's a lot of chat about it on Camino forums

Not true today for Catwoman.

Crutch okay and no charge for the wheelchair with Ryanair. Santander to Edinburgh

@moseyp, They were never charged for the sticks... just the use of the chair by Ryanair at Dublin (not outound from Manchester). They have since been to court and lost over the same charge.

Having said that I came back from Verona on crutches this year no problem.

@hawkwind, that's very kind thanks! But it's not that important, if I can't take them over this year easily it's not the worst thing - they'll wait until the following season

@under a new name, thanks, suspect shipping will be close to the same price - will email Ryanair tomorrow and assuming they tell me €30 - €40 for checked, I think I will probably just leave them home until next year

Yes. My Scott Cascade carbon poles break down into 3 sections and fit in my carry on. As for normal poles it would definitely be a no.

I see we are still no nearer to understanding the necessity of poles without skis. Puzzled

@moseyp, Forgive the directness but.... are your poles really special? Puzzled Toofy Grin

Ryanair lost the wheelchair case in 2004 and haven't levied the charge since then.

@moseyp, the issue is more likely to be with airport security rather than Ryanair.

@Bergmeister, it's not very interesting. I wanted to buy some bamboo poles over the weekend with a free shipping deal (two pairs, for myself in Italy and my cousin at home) so I thought I'd ship them home and collect my ones when I went back at Christmas - either way I'd need to take a pair on a flight.

@Gaza, oh right, I thought he meant his parents went to court and lost. Good!

Considering last season the were signs at check in stating even collapsible selfie sticks are prohibited on board in hand luggage I doubt It!
