Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

5 weeks in Austria rent or buy

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, we tried to make it a season but I'm happy to settle for 5 weeks [Feb/Mar] in Austria. We'll be based in Bad Hofgastein and we are taking an SUV with us. We've always hired skis and never made a note of the ones we liked although I recall RC4 being printed on mine last year. I'm wondering if we should hire so we can swap skis if need be or buy some 100 quid-ish ones from eBay. Also when I try to book skis online the max number of days is always 14 so I don't know how much discount I might get from a longer term hire.
Any advice on hire vs buy OR getting best hire rate would be welcome.

You're probably best economically with your own but if you've no idea what you are looking for could well make a big mistake punting on eBay. RC4 are a Fischer Race ski but the branding is applied to lots of skis I understand from FIS compliant to piste cruisers like Progressors.

I'd point at Decathlon for a solid range of cheaper piste skis.

If you go the hire route strike up a relationship with a shop owner who'll give you a good price for the period and allow you to swap out for conditions. Perhaps tell him how many friends you'll have visiting.

If you want to be able to swap hire skis on demand then you normally need to be renting the top grade skis, which would work out expensive for five weeks. I'd suggest fitting in a ski test at a fridge then buying the skis you like best. Alternatively you can rent for the first few days and then buy the skis you're renting. If you're doing this then most shops will let you rent a few different pairs then deduct the rental costs when you buy.

@mopi, we got some fairly hefty discounts last year on a Black Friday deal with Glisshop last year. You're unlikely to get some for £100 as they'll be new skis, but worth a look (if you know what you want!).

Buy.

Resell on Ebay or whatever.
