Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What's your ideal depth?

Mines about 6" to 12" of fresh on a well compacted base, not known as "hero snow" for nothing. For some of my friends no new snow is ideal for them, for others, they can never have enough.

What's your favourite measurement? When's enough, enough, and when is it too much?

Well, 12" is the most I;ve ever had - last week in Les Arcs. I skied one bump run on the monday when the snow had just begin to fall - it was bloody hard work, even with 2" of new snow. Fast forward to Wednesday morning by which point it had put down around 30 to 40 cm and I was floating down the same lines without even touching the bottom. Fantastic.

not been any deeper, so can;t comment

no more than 9" of fresh on a good piste, any more and it starts to get difficult to turn on awkward slopes

3 foot of blower - pushing a bow wave is pretty fun. (& in Europe too)

Anything over 1 foot is usually fun.

nbt, and now you're just getting into it!

fatbob, ha ha ha

Personally, when it's deep enough to elevator you down a 10m cliff, it's deep enough. By elevator, I mean, you go off the cliff and simply float down the 10m drop. Amazing. Delightful.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

Overall I agree with a solid base (but not hardpacked/icey) with 6" - 12" of light pow on top. Though those rare bottomless pow days can be pretty damn nice too, as long as you have good steep terrain to ride. But they are undoubtably tougher to ride and much more tiring than than "hero snow."

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

not being into elevating down cliffs (cool though, I left it too late in life) I empathize with this comment. But I know why - sitting back and punishing the quads - I had a lesson in powder last year and though I got it wrong 75% of the time, I now know what to aim at. stand up, bend ze ankles, and go for it!
