Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi All,

I've just come home from Hemmel Fridge, I had to be stretchered off at the bottom of the slope.

Silly accident but it hurts a lot.

This is all about my left knee ...
I think it was being forced clock wise by the tail of the ski as I ended up on my posterior.
It hurts . I can just about put some weight on it gently.

The staff at the Snow Centre were brilliant, Simon was there in a flash followed by Tom & Owen who got the ice packs out.
Big thanks too to the misses & son who came out and picked up my van and took me home.
(This is surprising as managed to break her left knee cap the night before we set off to go skiing in Austria back in 1984)

If feels very hot and angry and a bit of a lump has come up on the outside of the leg just below and up to the Patela (Knee cap).

What do you experts think I've done?
Will I be able to go on the Pre Season Bash 7 & a half weeks from now?
Will I be able to go on the End of Season Bash in 7 months time?
Will I be able to ski again?
Should I apply frozen garden peas or would broad beans be better.

What should I do?

I've just rang 111 and they suggest I get myself to A&E within 4 Hours! Really?

You probably need RICE (as long as it's only a sprain) http://www.everydayhealth.com/knee-pain/knee-pain-rice-therapy.aspx

See Doctor/Physio for guidance
Gradually strengthen when appropriate...under guidance from Physio
I would expect you to be OK for skiing in 7.5 weeks

As for sympathy...you've got it.

@Old Fartbag, but you don't know what it is. Why bother ringing 111 then not taking the advice?

Oh no, I hope it settles down over night - the description you give sounds horribly like one of best ways to tear an ACL so fingers crossed.

Ugh...
Go to A&E and if the response is lame, ask for a referral to see a sports injury specialist. If you don't have private insurance, it might still be worth checking who is on the BUPA list locally as a orthopaedic surgeon with sports injury specialisation, as they probably practice in your local NHS hospital so you can ask to see him/her by name. (I did this recently when I needed to see a gastric surgeon). If you are not happy and you have private insurance (or the cash) bite the bullet and see a private orthopaedic surgeon/knee specialist asap. As a total ski nut, the thought of not being able to ski or not being clear what you need to do to get to ski again means I would walk over hot coals to get it looked at!

Depends on the diagnosis of course, but if it's diagnosed as ACL related, a visit to good sports physio should help eventually. Mr P stretched his badly after a fall when we were hiking in the Alps a few years ago. After about 2 weeks in a velcro full leg brace (courtesy of Sion hospital and the exceeding efficient swiss health service), he went, armed with his x ray to a great physio in Horsham and was given some knee and leg related exercises which he stuck to religiously for a couple of months. I think he saw her once or at most twice for about £40 per session. You could see the development of the muscles around his knee area and he skied on it that season. I can't recall the recovery time-he did it in late July and we were skiing in late November. He did buy a good knee support brace too. No problems since when he's skiing, though he could feel a few twinges this summer walking downhill a lot in the Dolomites.

Thanks for pouring on the sympathy, I'm lapping it up.

I'm in A&E now arrived 10 minutes ago. I've settled in with my laptop and customer list to ring up for tomorrow's job.

I've got telly and Wifi & my bag of frozen peas in a cool bag to keep them frozen.

All I need now is my leg fixed.

Well not too long to wait in A&E, I was out before the post Emerdale rush.
Velcro Splint fitted and orders.
I'll have to go back on Friday to visit the Fracture Clinic.
So I've got the excuse to do nothing now and have everyone running around after me.

How is it this morning? Hope it turns out to be nothing serious but if you had to be stretchered off, unless you have a very low pain threshold, I'd guess there's damage. RICE for now and see what the fracture clinic say and insist on a scan... not just x-rays. Hopefully it's minor but only a scan will confirm for sure.

+1 as they may not be aware and will need educating that the major risk in your accident as actually to ligaments not bones

@DrLawn, Fingers crossed it's a quick healing process. A couple of years ago I had a gradual flare up from a 10 year old old MCL injury to my knee, increasing stiffness and pain, especially in the mornings. I got myself onto 8 sessions of intense physio at my local hospital and after putting in a fair bit of hard work to build up supporting muscles with some self massage to break up inflamed scar tissue it has pretty much been perfect since then. I thought I'd have to keep doing the exercises but haven't even needed to. I really have become a convert into the benefits of post injury targeted exercises.

Thanks for the concern and support!

I was feeling pretty down this morning, but as the day has gone one it seems to be much better.
I'm sitting here with bag of frozen peas thawing out on my knee as I write.

Back to the fracture clinic tomorrow, so lets pray for a good prognosis.
