Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lacks the sophistication of all d'huez ?????
No mention of vertical or powder days or depth per year or season length.

Even if it's crap you can make out it's the new Alaska or Japan or whatever and no one will be any the wiser?

@cameronphillips2000, sounds incredible - worth doing just to get your own pistenbully! Guess knowledgeable guide very important as mountain rescue somewhat limited...

We spent about 6 weeks in Kyrgyzstan over the summer. The mountains are incredible and would have great potential for ski touring. The infrastructure would no doubt be lacking but I'm sure it'd add to the adventure. Speaking to a few locals and expats, snowsports are quite popular and there are a growing number of guiding companies.

From Bishkek to the mountains around Issyk-Kul the road isn't too bad, but venturing any further south might be trickier in the winter. Flights seem very reasonable from Europe, and you get 60 days visa free. Definitely worth a trip I reckon!

under a new name and I talked about going, looked at the youtube vids, and thought something doesn't look right - oh yes, no one's turning! From what we saw very gentle terrain, peeps on fat skis and boards cruising long slow turns. For uann and myself who prefer not ridiculously floaty skis, it's a long way to go to end up pole-ing down the fall line! Perhaps it's not all like that, but even the author says they went climbing for something "more challenging"....?

Looked into this a few years ago, but have yet to pull the trigger.

There are about 20 ski resorts in Kyrgyzstan.

They are all tiny.

Karakol, at roughly 2300-3100m, is the biggest and steepest.

It has ~5 lifts. It is open Nov / Dec to Apr.

Norus has the best rep for heliskiing.

It is lower (1500-3000m), shorter season (Dec to Mar) and has fewer lifts (~3).

The best way to approach it is to think of it as a "Kyrgyzstan adventure with some skiing".

Worth going there just for the best-in-world scenery and unique food / culture.

This is Karakol's trail map:

Haven't been to Suusamyr, but had a great week in Kyrg in 2012:

One of the gang stayed on and had a day up at Karakol after we left - sounded like fun (for a day) - old Les Menuires chairlifts with the signs still on them in French...

Brilliant country - have been meaning to go back ever since but have yet to slot it into a winter...
