Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Kitzteinhorn end of November

Hi. This is my first post but have been sucking up info for a while but wanted to ask if it's worth booking a few days to Austria at the end of November? It's my 40th birthday and I really want to spend the day skiing so have the opportunity to go to the kitzteinhorn. I could also go to the hintertux so any ideas which one is the best option etc would be gratefully received Madeye-Smiley

Stubai is the only Austrian glacier I've skied, but conditions will be comparable.

At the end of Nov you can have really good snow cover 5ocm of fresh powder and most lifts open, or you can have barely covered ice with only a few lifts open, or you can have a howling storm and all lifts on wind hold.

Personally I'll probably ski at Obergurgl on my birthday (mid Nov) just 'cos it opens then and I'll have been skiing Stubai for over a month by then and probably sick of it Laughing

Short answer is you will probably get some fun skiing at that time, but you may as well hold off booking until a week before (maybe book flights to Munich or Innsbruck now) and see where is looking best - there'll be plenty of accommodation.

There is likely to be more and a greater variety at Hintertux, but I would advise against staying at Hintertux village as its tiny, better to stay down the road in Mayrhofen 35 mins away.

So depends what you are looking for.

Thankyou Smile I'm staying with friends just outside kitzbuhel and obviously skiing will be limited unless it's on a glacier. I will have a car so either will be an option. Fingers crossed for some snow Smile

Blighty1066 Mrs MA & I have done over 20 years of autumn/early winter (late October to late November) ski trips - to Hintertux, Stubai, Kaunertal, Kitzsteinhorn, Soelden and Pitztal in Austria; Tignes in France; Saas Fee in Switzerland; and Zugspitze in Germany.

In that time we've skied everything from fresh powder to the hardest of hardpack - but have always had a decent ski with generally good snow cover. We did have thin to marginal (ie very icy) cover in Tignes one early November and once had one day with all lifts closed due to a storm with rain at all levels - also in Tignes - but still had a good time.

On the other hand, we've also skied non-glacial areas - at Obergurgl and Obertauern - in late November. So it's all in the lap of the gods - but there's more than a fair chance of pretty decent glacier conditions in late November.

I'm pretty sure you'll be fine Very Happy
