Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Battle of the UCPAs

This is for anyone with experience of the Les Arcs and Les Contamines UCPA centres...

Group of four (probably) inter level skiers looking to go first or second week in March 17: any comparisons of the two? LC works out at a good price, but there are "concerns" within the group over the lesser piste lengths...

TIA

I can't comment on the UCPA centres, but having skied both areas, I prefer Les Contamines - it is a huge and underrated area. It'll be less crowded than Les Arcs on the slopes and so you'd probably actually get more skiing done. If you have people in the group with strong aversions to ever repeating a run you might not win them over though. For me the quietness, excellent snow, and terrain are far more important.

If nightlife is a concern though, that will also be quieter than Les Arcs - which might be a downside.

Are your group interested in off-piste, @DannySimpson? If so, then the terrain to be explored in Les C is very interesting. Will you be taking the tuition - recommended? If so, then "length of piste available" becomes less of an issue as you focus on improving your skiing.

Hi @pam w, we're not out and out off-pisters, just playing on the edges, etc. For that possibly like for like LC / LA...

Agreed: it is the intention to take the tuition, so time spent in lessons doesn't need miles of pistes.

Am I right in thinking your place is "round the corner"?

The price differential is about £150 in favour of LC, which is a significant chunk of the beer budget!

Beer might well be cheaper, too. My place isn't far. There are buses from the Belleville side if LC to Hauteluce which is in the Espace Diamant but probably not worth the trip if you have lessons and a LC pass.

We'd go for the "half time" lessons so would have some exploring time but probably not enough to "travel"...

Will investigate beer economics!

I have a place in Les C so I'm biased but I think the single thing where the skiing in Les C stands out is the the large area of easily accessible and relatively safe off-piste terrain between the pistes. If you like that kind of thing then its a very good choice even without the lower price.

If you have any questions I'll try to answer them

Les Arcs UCPA is probably one of the best ones. Big centre, cheap beer, and the food....it was pretty amazing on most nights. The area 1600 is quiet nothing much happens there so you have to venture up to 1950 I think, which was a long slog at night. Skiing area is great lots of varied terrain and side bits etc. A few too many flat bits but I'm a boarder so there you go. Always book into lessons as you get local knowledge and meet new people. You can always have a lie-in if needed just let someone know. Would like to go Les C one day though and probably won't be going back to Les A. What about Val T?

Cheers @Gainz, good info.

Val Thore more 'spenny than LA / LC. Flaine well priced too, although that would be 3rd time for one of us, which he isn't keen on...
